It wasnt true what was said about menot even close. But people believed it and passed it on. My life was awful. I couldnt eat, I couldnt sleep. I took showers so I could cry without disturbing my family. Finally, my attackers ran out of rocksor they moved on to somebody else. Either way, things got better. A friend told me that if I lived my life according to Gods Will, most people would eventually see that the gossip was false. He was right. Today my life is better than ever. My faith in God and others is strong. Ive forgiven those who lied about meand those who listened. At least I hope I have. Ive also learned to be a lot more careful about what I say about others and about what I allow others to say to me. As this book points out, people are fragile. Reading Sticks and Stones has helped me. If you have a story similar to mine, I hope and pray it will help you. ~ Anonymous

Author Bridget Watkins knows that kids can be cruel. Without knowing the consequences for their actions and words, children often say things that have the potential to hurt others very seriously. In her inspirational guidebook, Watkins shares her personal story of struggles and eventual success in an effort to inspire children who are facing any kind of challenge to believe in their potential. Watkins offers a glimpse into her upbringing and describes how she learned to handle each obstacle by relying on not only herself, but also her faith. As she guides children through a variety of scenarios and several steps that emphasize the importance of good choices, she includes questions to help them identify goals, values, and prepare for a successful future. While describing her own walk of faith, Watkins reveals how she learned to trust in God and believe in her abilities, which eventually helped her find success. Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones, but Words Will Never Hurt Me shares anecdotes, Scripture, and words of wisdom in order to encourage children to dream and have confidence in themselves, regardless of their circumstances. Bridget Watkins and her husband served in ministry for nearly thirty years. Her poems have been published in The Sword of the Spirit magazine and in Treasured Poems of America; one of her short stories, "Chef Caleb," was published in delicious living magazine. Sticks & Stones by Abby Cooper is a feel-good middle grade debut with just a dash of magic... Ever since she was a baby, the words people use to describe Elyse have instantly appeared on her arms and legs. At first it was just "cute" and "adorable," but as she's gotten older and kids have gotten meaner, words like "loser" and "pathetic" appear, and those words bubble up and itch. And then there are words like "interesting," which she's not really sure how to feel about. Now, at age twelve, she's starting middle school, and just when her friends who used to accept and protect her are drifting away, she receives an anonymous note saying "I know who you are, and I know what you're dealing with. I want to help." As Elyse works to solve the mystery of who is sending her these notes, she also finds new ways to accept who she is and to become her best self. Fans of Wonder by R.J. Palacio will enjoy this book for its similar writing style, compelling characters, and upbeat tone...A quirky, clever, and lighthearted look at what it means to accept oneself..." —School Library Journal

The Swahili coast of Africa is often described as a paragon of transnational culture and racial fluidity. Yet, during a brief period in the 1960s, Zanzibar became deeply divided along racial lines as intellectuals and activists, engaged in bitter debates about their nation's future, ignited a deadly conflict that spread across the island. War of Words, War of Stones explores how violently enforced racial boundaries arose from Zanzibar's entangled history. Jonathon Glassman challenges explanations that assume racial thinking in the colonial world reflected only Western ideas. He shows how Africans crafted competing ways of categorizing race from local tradition and engagement with the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds.

Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Such untrue words. When Words Hurt is the first of five books portraying the struggles people often deal with as a result of the harsh words of others. Annette Lee skillfully portrays three families whose children experience disappointments and heartaches at the voice of someone else, usually an adult. The stories will exemplify God's presence in the least of them to bring about a change that will benefit not only the children but the adults as well. Readers will share their heartaches and celebrate with them as they share in the fulfillment of their desires. When Words Hurt is a perfect tool for teens and parents of teens to learn how to understand, appreciate, and follow the call to seek God first in their lives.
