This book is based on events which took place at an Esso operation (a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation) at Longford, Victoria, Australia on 25 September 1998. During this particular shift numerous maintenance personnel, administration staff and shift workers were on site at the Esso gas production and processing plant when a vital piece of processing equipment exploded and caught fire. Two workers were killed and number of workers were injured. The initial explosion caused numerous other explosions and fires, which took two days to extinguish. Through a proclamation by the State Governor all gas supply, except for critical areas of the State, was shut off. A Royal Commission was established to inquire into the cause of the explosion. Throughout the course of the inquiry Esso sought to point responsibility for the incident to the individual operators. Workers Inferno is the story of the people whose lives were changed as a result this tragic event. Ramsina Lee interviewed some of the workers who were on shift on 25 September 1998, and their families, to tell their story and the impact of this tragedy on their lives.

Workers' Inferno is based on events which took place at an Esso (a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation) operation at Longford, Victoria Australia on 25 September 1998. Employees were working at the Esso gas production and processing plant, situated at Longford in Sale, when a gas plant ruptured and exploded, killing two of the workers and physically injuring others. This is the untold story of the lives of the workers and their families whose lives were changed forever as a result of the accident and subsequent efforts by the company to blame its workers for the accident during the Royal Commission into the explosion. Marx’s Inferno reconstructs the major arguments of Karl Marx’s Capital and inaugurates a completely new reading of a seminal classic. Rather than simply a critique of classical political economy, William Roberts argues that Capital was primarily a careful engagement with the motives and aims of the workers’ movement. This important book contains case studies with substantive analysis of Chinese workers in a variety of settings: state enterprises, urban collectives, township and village enterprises, domestic private enterprises, and foreign funded enterprises. The cases include urban workers migrant workers from the countryside, and workers who are sent to work outside of China. The analytical framework for these case studies lays out why labor rights violations have been occurring in China and highlights the contex in which these violations operate and the extent to which these selected cases are not isolated incidents.
