This book is based on events which took place at an Esso operation (a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation) at Longford, Victoria, Australia on 25 September 1998. During this particular shift numerous maintenance personnel, administration staff and shift workers were on site at the Esso gas production and processing plant when a vital piece of processing equipment exploded and caught fire. Two workers were killed and number of workers were injured. The initial explosion caused numerous other explosions and fires, which took two days to extinguish. Through a proclamation by the State Governor all gas supply, except for critical areas of the State, was shut off. A Royal Commission was established to inquire into the cause of the explosion. Throughout the course of the inquiry Esso sought to point responsibility for the incident to the individual operators. Workers Inferno is the story of the people whose lives were changed as a result this tragic event. Ramsina Lee interviewed some of the workers who were on shift on 25 September 1998, and their families, to tell their story and the impact of this tragedy on their lives.

Workers' Inferno is based on events which took place at an Esso (a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation) operation at Longford, Victoria Australia on 25 September 1998. Employees were working at the Esso gas production and processing plant, situated at Longford in Sale, when a gas plant ruptured and exploded, killing two of the workers and physically injuring others. The initial explosion caused numerous other explosions and fires, which took two days to extinguish. Through a proclamation by the State Governor all gas supply, except for critical areas of the state, was shut-off. This is the untold story of the lives of the workers and their families whose lives were changed forever as a result of the accident and subsequent efforts by the company to blame its workers for the accident during the Royal Commission into the explosion. Praise for Workers Inferno "Workers' Inferno is a gripping and emotion-laden account of the tragedy that occurred at the Esso gas plant at Longford, Victoria, in September 1998. Ramsina Lee begins by delving into the happy but sometimes complicated family lives of many of the workers involved in the explosion. Then she describes the confusion, bewilderment and heroism of these workers as the breakdown of the gas plant causes the explosions and fires that rip through the workplace and change their lives forever. Finally, the emotional aftermath of the tragedy tears families apart, leaving a permanent human cost to be borne. I read Workers' Inferno in one sitting, and felt the fears, emotions and bitterness of the workers and their families as an avoidable workplace tragedy that changed the course of human lives. The message of the book is clear -- take workplace health, safety and training seriously so that workers can return home safely to their loved ones at the end of each working day." Joe de Bruyn, National President, Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees Association "Workers' Inferno is a beautifully written, almost poetic account - passionate, compassionate engrossing and unforgettable." Andrew Hopkins, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, Australian National University, Author of Lessons from Longford: The Esso Gas Plant Explosion "Ramsina Lee, in this book has, possibly for the first time, not only described the events of the day but also meticulously documented in narrative form, the impact on the lives of some of those that were involved in one of Australia's most prominent industrial disasters. The loss and suffering of the Longford workers and their families was profound. Only now, twenty years after the terror and trauma of that day has the subsequent loss and suffering been accurately portrayed." Jim Ward, Longford Survivor "Ramsina Lee has very thoughtfully allowed the families of those affected by the Longford gas plant explosion to have a say. She tastefully weaves created scenes and settings with interviews of those directly involved, and their family members. The catastrophic personal events and tragedies of 25 September 1998, the immediate aftermath and the long lasting effects are felt in the heartfelt interviews. The intense love for lives lost and lives forever changed. The callousness of the big corporation and the blatant disregard for the 'scapegoat' and their family. A champion for workplace safety and the preciousness of life and love." Elizabeth Coleman Gray

Marx’s Inferno reconstructs the major arguments of Karl Marx’s Capital and inaugurates a completely new reading of a seminal classic. Rather than simply a critique of classical political economy, William Roberts argues that Capital was primarily a careful engagement with the motives and aims of the workers’ movement. Understood in this light, Capital emerges as a profound work of political theory. Placing Marx against the background of nineteenth-century socialism, Roberts shows how Capital was ingeniously modeled on Dante’s Inferno, and how Marx, playing the role of Virgil for the proletariat, introduced partisans of workers’ emancipation to the secret depths of the modern “social Hell.” In this manner, Marx revised republican ideas of freedom in response to the rise of capitalism. Combining research on Marx’s interlocutors, textual scholarship, and forays into recent debates, Roberts traces the continuities linking Marx’s theory of capitalism to the tradition of republican political thought. He immerses the reader in socialist debates about the nature of commerce, the experience of labor, the power of bosses and managers, and the possibilities of political organization. Roberts rescues those debates from the past, and shows how they speak to ever-renewed concerns about political life in today’s world.

Catherine herself could never have envisaged how the trip would end for her - surfacing in an involuntary psychiatric ward, separated from her husband and child, unable to understand who she was, or remember how she got there. In her two weeks on the ward, Catherine turned to her notebook to reconstruct who she was, piece by piece, from the fragments of her life as they drifted back to her. The result is this powerful exploration of psychosis and motherhood, at once intensely personal, yet holding within it a universal experience - of how we love, live and understand ourselves in relation to each other. In his first days as Prime Minister, John Curtin presented himself to the press as a self-styled intellectual who loved sport and relaxing, when he could, with a book, beach walk, game of cards or fossick in the garden. He also revealed that he enjoyed poetry so much that he held to a Sunday night poetry ritual. Curtin was Australia's third wartime Prime Minister, Labor's eighth Prime Minister, and the first Prime Minister from a Western Australian electorate. 'Toby Davidson reveals a new perspective on John Curtin: the poetry of his times, and the poems he himself read. As Davidson shows, Curtin's poetry reading and his reflections upon it influenced his thoughts and language from his socialist youth to the last days of his leadership of a nation transformed by global peril. Good for the Soul: John Curtin's Life with Poetry is a unique, patiently researched and fascinating re-evaluation of Australia's revered wartime Prime Minister.' – John Edwards, author of John Curtin's War Volume I & II 'A stunningly comprehensive account which shows a side of John Curtin we have only glimpsed before. Davidson skilfully traces how poetry was Curtin's companion and ally from his humble beginnings in rural Victoria to his death in office in 1945, two months before the end of World War II.' – Professor David Black, editor of In His Own Words: John Curtin's Speeches and Writings and Friendship is a Sheltering Tree: John Curtin's Letters 1907 to 1945.

This important book contains case studies with substantive analysis of Chinese workers in a variety of settings: state enterprises, urban collectives, township and village enterprises, domestic private enterprises, and foreign funded enterprises. The cases include urban workers migrant workers from the countryside, and workers who are sent to work outside of China. The analytical framework for these case studies lays out why labor rights violations have been occurring in China and highlights the contex in which these violations operate and the extent to which these selected cases are not isolated incidents. Moreover, the dilemma of Chinese workers is put into international perspective: the context of the international labor market, the setting of competitive minimum wages in Asia, and the concern for Chinese workers' rights taken up by the International Labor Organization (ILO). This book debunks the conventional wisdom that Chinese workers are thriving because the Chinese economy is booming. Indeed the wage structures of these enterprises of different ownership types contribute to widening income disparities in China. The book uncovers what exactly overseas Chinese entrepreneurship (Taiwan and Hong Kong), means at the factory level. And it calls for a new approach to scrutinizing the phenomena of the so-called Chinese economic miracle and it's repercussions on other economies and labor markets.
