Case Study from the year 2010 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: This study aimed at evaluating the impact of worker’s participation in the decision-making process on job satisfaction, industrial harmony, and productivity in organizations, with particular reference to the Universal Basic Education Board in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Built around the survey design, two hundred and eighty-four (284) respondents were reached through a multi-stage sampling method and questionnaire was used as the instrument for collecting primary data, while relying on the library for secondary data. Data from the field was subjected to description by simple percentages, but drawing of inference was done through the use of the chi-square statistical test. Pivoted by the Achievement-Power-Affiliation motivation theory of David Mcclelland, the study acknowledges the difficulty in measuring productivity in this context. Data that emerge reveal that there is a direct relationship between the degree of workers’ participation in the various organizational decision making processes and job satisfaction, industrial harmony, and productivity. The study, thus, concludes that if workers actively participate in the decision making processes of organization, certainly job satisfaction would breed industrial harmony, which ultimately would ensure higher productivity. To this end, the study recommends, among others, that industrial unions in organizations be strengthened by managements, and workers should be enlightened on their right to seize opportunity of involvement in decision making and trained in the art of constructive participation in the various processes in organizations.

In this era of frequent corporate restructuring and rapid technological change, successful companies must have employees who are open to innovation and to changing roles, and are able to work together productively. Research shows that employees most likely to be adaptable, cooperative, and productive are those who are satisfied with their jobs. Therefore, it is essential that leaders of American business understand how to enhance job satisfaction within their organizations. In Job Satisfaction, top academic researchers in the field share state-of-the-art information on creating job satisfaction, its resulting benefits, and the risks of having too many employees who are dissatisfied with their jobs. As they show, job satisfaction is also an extremely useful predictor for management. An employee's level of job satisfaction is the single most important piece of data a manager or organizational psychologist can have to predict an employee's rate of absenteeism, decision to resign or retire, desire for union representation, or level of psychological withdrawal. Before they can enhance job satisfaction, managers must understand its components. Research demonstrates that an employee's level of satisfaction is based not only on events in the present and past, but also on his perceptions of the future. Foreseeing future opportunities for advancement, for increased pay, for participation in decision-making, or for networking lead to a high level of job satisfaction. In fact, the authors reveal, perceiving future opportunity can actually be more motivating than actually receiving a raise, getting promoted, or being given additional responsibilities. Job Satisfaction dispels the notion that jobstress necessarily leads to dissatisfaction, and shows how an organization should focus on increasing satisfaction rather than just reducing stress. It is especially important for managers to stimulate job satisfaction by improving their employees' sense of achievement through making tasks and their objectives clear, as well as giving feedback. Academics and managers alike will find Job Satisfaction a source of new and useful information for understanding and enhancing satisfaction on the job.

Abstract: The study investigated how does participative decision making affect employees' job satisfaction in a specific work setting (Public and private pharmaceutical companies in Egypt). A public pharmaceutical company was chosen as an example for public business sector companies in Egypt, and a comparison was made between the forms of management system applied in the public versus the private sampled companies. The study used in-depth semi- structured interviews with a total number of 32 employees and managers interviewed from the two companies. Results of the study highlighted a strong relation proving that applying participative decision making in the company increases employees' job satisfaction. In addition, the study assessed four employee-based factors affecting participative decision making and concluded that employee's efficiency has a positive effect on incorporating the employee in the decision making process, then comes the second factor which is the years of employee's experience in the same field. On the other hand the study failed to find a strong correlation between the other two factors - the educational level and the managerial level- and participative decision making, suggesting the need for further study. The comparison held in the study included the pathways each company gives for its employees to communicate with the middle and top management levels. It also included four institutional-based factors affecting employees' satisfaction and participation in decision making; the incentives system, promotion system, concept of hard work in the organizational culture, and disciplinary system and accountability distribution. And the study concluded that the management system applied in the private company encourages employees more to participate in the decision-making process and their incentives system, promotion system, and disciplinary systems were found more satisfying to employees compared to the systems applied in the public company. The study came up with recommendations directed to the management of the public company in order to increase employees' satisfaction and thereby increase company competitiveness against the fast growing private sector in Egypt.

Project Report in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Leadership, , language: English, abstract: The overall objective of this study is to assess the level of job satisfaction among the workers of the Koforidua Regional Hospital. To achieve this broad objective, the following specific objectives have been formulated: To determine the extent to which staffs are satisfied with job performed and duties. To establish if the work itself, recognition, opportunity for growth, and working conditions determine job satisfaction in the hospital. To establish the extent to which participation in decision-making affects the level of job satisfaction among staff of the hospital. To assess the relationship between job dissatisfaction and output among staff of the hospital. The work environment has changed greatly over time in response to the advancement of technology and the world becoming a global village. In the traditional work environment, employees were employed and every decision taken for them, while they had to obey the instructions of their superiors. Today, this is being replaced with greater employee involvement in order to increase an effective workforce and productivity. Khainga (2005) in her study on job satisfaction and organization commitment, noted that this major shift from being docile recipients of instructions to being part of the decision-making process has affected the level of employee participation, making and degree of satisfaction and commitment. Secondly, the employee today is more literate and empowered and more inclined to be heard. There is much documentary evidence that involvement in the decision-making process among staff leads to employee commitment, decreased absenteeism and reduced employee turnover. It ensures committed staff and stable workforce, which reduce cost of recruitment and training. Despite all these provisions that increase organisational efficiency, Koforidua Regional Hospital seems to have a gap in terms of highly qualified personnel to deliver on the mission and the vision of the hospital as a result of job unsatisfaction. This practice has led to dissatisfaction of services delivered to clients of the hospital.
