American Women Sculptors written by Charlotte Streifer Rubinstein and has been published by Macmillan Reference USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Architecture categories.

"In 1875 Anne Whitney traveled to Florence, Italy, to select the marble for a statue of Samuel Adams commissioned for the U.S. Capitol. That summer, in a small village outside Paris, she noticed a woman who worked as a model for the local sculptors. Not the typical artists model, the woman was quite old and would often drowse while sitting for them, her kerchiefed head fallen forward in sleep. Later, when Whitney returned to America, she brought with her not only the completed statue for her respectable commission but the far less conventional Le Modèle, a deeply human image of the old woman. Created at a time when such subjects as the old and the poor were rarely given attention, Whitney's sculpture is highly innovative for its day. Charlotte Streifer Rubinstein's American Women Sculptors: A History of Women Working in Three Dimensions chronicles the lives and works of hundreds of women such as Anne Whitney, telling of their public successes, their private sensibilities and visions, their unique contributions to their chosen art form as women and as individuals. Rich in anecdote and analysis, the book brings to life their personal stories and the times they lived in to create an intimate yet wide-reaching portrait. It is the first comprehensive survey of the American woman's generous contribution to the sculpted form. From small garden bronzes and portrait busts to large-scale equestrian monuments and war memorials, the works of American women sculptors stand in parks, plazas, and public buildings across the country. Often struggling to overcome the persistent obstacle of sexism - and for women of color, racism - these women took part in every significant art movement of their time: they were neoclassicists who worked in marble in Rome, modernists who brought cubism and abstract sculpture to the United States, leaders among the artists of the Harlem Renaissance, and abstract expressionists, minimalists, and installation artists. Yet despite this continuous history of achievement, their stories have gone largely untold, their contributions often unrecognized. As Rubenstein writes in her introduction, "How many of the thousands who pass Bethesda Fountain in Central Park know that it was created by a woman?" Rubenstein takes as her starting point in this history the expressive masks, basketry, and ceramics of pre-Colonial Native American women rarely included in traditional art surveys. Following are Patience Wright, considered by many to be America's first professional sculptor; the women sculptors of the Gilded Age, whose creativity flourished under the influence of the suffrage movement; the women who worked for the Federal Art Project during the Depression, among the founding members of the Sculptor's Guild, and such important abstract sculptors as Louise Nevelson and Louise Bourgeois. The author concludes with the contributions of such young contemporary sculptors as Maya Lin, whose Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall has become one of the country's landmarks. Both major and lesser-known artists are included, and the more conventional definitions of sculpture expanded to consider artists working in a variety of three-dimensional forms. Rubinstein discusses the works of weavers, potters, furniture carvers, and even performance artists, acknowledging the enormous influence women have had in these endeavors. Throughout the book Rubinstein illuminates the works themselves and the artists' techniques with detailed description and commentary, while the text is complemented by more than 300 illustrations. American Women Sculptors will be valued for the author's meticulous research and enjoyed for her appreciation of storytelling. It celebrates a rich, lively history." --

Traditional approaches to coaching fail to account for the way organizations really work. Attempts to enhance leadership capability one person at a time, through private one-to-one coaching sessions, are unlikely to succeed by themselves. Coaching in Three Dimensions: Meeting the Challenges of a Complex World offers a more connected, systemic approach, aligning coaching with the realities and challenges of organizations operating in an ever more complex world. Coaching in Three Dimensions is structured around a central model: the three dimensions of coaching. Using stories and case studies, the book enables readers to: Consider their current and desired approach to coaching: is it traditional, dialogic, or systemic? Identify which areas of practice they work in and wish to work in: one-to-one coaching, group/team coaching, and/or organizational coaching? Think about stretching their development as a coach in terms of competence, capability, and perspective: how do you enhance your capacity to manage the challenges of increasing complexity? The book explains complexity using simple language and easy-to-recognize examples, and suggests pragmatic approaches going forwards. Coaches will learn how to expand their scope and impact, and to navigate the new and difficult challenges posed by contemporary businesses. Clients wishing to use coaching in complex change work will learn what to look out for in prospective coaches and how to best deploy them in their organizations. Coaching in Three Dimensions will appeal greatly to all coaches, including those working with organisations, students and those in training, as well as HR and OD professionals and senior leaders.

At the same time that employers are finding that they can no longer offer the traditional carrots of job security and lavish compensation packages, they are coming to recognize the need to forge closer partnerships with their employees-partnerships defined by shared risks, responsibilities, and rewards. But a paradigm shift of this magnitude cannot occur without considerable effort on the parts of both employers and employees. Such a successful fusion of personal and organizational visions requires a radical change in attitudes, expectations, and work patterns, and those who are quickest to make those changes are sure to be the big winners in the years ahead. The Fourth Dimension provides a comprehensive program for managers challenged to do more with less and individuals seeking to improve the quality of their worklives. It offers proven techniques to help you excel in the three primary work dimensions outlined in the authors' acclaimed MetaWork System(TM): * PowerWork(TM): efficiency, effectiveness, and the achievement of the right results * NetWork(TM): sharing competence and knowledge with others and developing more dynamic working relationships * ValueWork(TM): achieving more frequent breakthroughs in performance and value added based on individual and group ideas You'll learn how to integrate these three primary dimensions into an incredibly potent Fourth Dimension, a newly defined workspace within which individuals, teams, and entire companies continually exceed their best hopes and expectations. Throughout The Fourth Dimension, the authors provide vivid real-life illustrations of the astonishing results that have been achieved with the techniques they describe. Structure And Form In Design written by Michael Hann and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book provides a critical examination of structure and form in design, covering a range of topics of great value to students and practitioners engaged in any of the specialist decorative arts and design disciplines. The complexities of two-dimensional phenomena are explained and illustrated in detail, while various three-dimensional forms are also discussed. In the context of the decorative arts and design, structure is the underlying framework, and form the resultant, visible, two- or three-dimensional outcome of the creative process. Whether hidden or visually detectable in the final design, structure invariably determines whether or not a design is successful in terms of both its aesthetics and its practical performance. Hann successfully identifies various geometric concepts, and presents and discusses a number of simple guidelines to assist the creative endeavours of both accomplished and student practitioners, teachers and researchers.
