It is 1970. Strober has just been told by the chairman of Berkeley's economics department that she can never get tenure. Driving home afterward she realizes the truth: she is being denied a regular faculty position because she is a mother. Angry, she also finds her life's work: to study and fight sexism, in the workplace, in academia, and at home. Strober's memoir captures the spirit of a revolution lived fully, from her Brooklyn childhood to her Stanford seminar on women and work. Strober's interest in women and work began when she saw her mother's frustration at the limitations of her position as a secretary. Her consciousness of the unfairness of the usual distribution of household chores came when she unsuccessfully asked her husband for help with housework. Later, when a group of conservative white male professors sputtered at the idea of government-subsidized child care, Strober made the case for its economic benefits. In the 1970s, the term "sexual harassment" had not yet been coined. Occupational segregation, quantifying the value of work in the home, and the cost of discrimination were new ideas.

Virtual environments (VE) are human-computer interfaces in which the computer creates a sensory-immersing environment that interactively responds to and is controlled by the behaviour of the user. Since these technologies will continue to become more reliable, more resolute and more affordable, it's important to consider the advantages that VEs may offer to support business processes. The term 'synthetic world' refers to a subset of VEs, having a large virtual landscape and a set of rules that govern the interactions among participants. Currently, the primary motivators for participation in these synthetic worlds appear to be fun and novelty. As the novelty wears off, synthetic worlds will need to demonstrate a favourable value proposition if they are to survive. In particular, non-game-oriented worlds will need to facilitate business processes to a degree that exceeds their substantial costs for development and maintenance. Working Through Synthetic Worlds explores a variety of different tasks that might benefit by being performed within a synthetic world. The editors use a distinctive format for the book, consisting of a set of chapters composed of three parts: ¢ a story or vignette that describes work conducted within a synthetic world based loosely on the question, 'what will work be like in the year 2025?', founded on the expert authors' expectations of plausible future technologies ¢ a scholarly review of the technologies described by the stories and the current theories related to those technologies ¢ a prescription for future research required to bridge the current state-of-the-art with the notional worlds described in the stories. Democratization in the developing and postcommunist world has yielded limited gains for labor. Explanations for this phenomenon have focused on the effect of economic crisis and globalization on the capacities of unions to become influential political actors and to secure policies that benefit their members. In contrast, the contributors to Working through the Past highlight the critical role that authoritarian legacies play in shaping labor politics in new democracies, providing the first cross-regional analysis of the impact of authoritarianism on labor, focusing on East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. Legacies from the predemocratic era shape labor’s present in ways that both limit and enhance organized labor’s power in new democracies. It all started when I started school grade one, when my teacher tied me to a chair. From there, my life was hard. I was bullied right through my school days, made fun of, and teased. It was really hard for me as a child. I am still trying to work out why do children do it? Dont they see what they are doing is really breaking children down in spirit and in life? This book shows how I dealt with it every day. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that life would be easy. I met so many people who went through what I went through. Everyone deals with it in a different way. I concentrated on the word of God. I was talking to a teenager one day, and she had so many problems. Thats when I decided to change my poetry book to a fifty-day diary to help people overcome the obstacles in their life. By writing this book, I hope people will see what they missed in life. By casting all your burdens on to God, you will be healed. It is not an easy road to walk, and it never will be. But with God by your side, you will make it. I also did some research and found that not a lot of people can concentrate for long on something. Thats why I only made it fifty days. So that people can take time out afterwards and think about the path they walked alone, without God by their side. My aim in writing this book is that people would see that with God by their side, anything is possible and that they can overcome the biggest obstacle in life and that nothing can hold them back.
