The acts of composing and performing are central processes to the formation of a musical work. Performance is a medium through which music is formed. It is a significant part of a work’s compositional process and, as such, forms a symbiotic relationship with the act of composing. An iterative cycle between performance and composition comes about when the composer performs their own work or composes through performance. Performance in this manner can be seen as a form of practice-based research that can guide the compositional process. This thesis aims to explore the agency of art world participants--nonprofit exhibition spaces, museums, and commercial galleries--in shaping the careers of artists. As artworks move through an ecosystem, their value--and ultimately the artist's career--is shaped from the unique endorsements and validations each participant has the agency to provide. The interdependence of the participants means opportunities for artists to capitalize on pre-established networks. Rooted in a discussion of value creation theories and the international art world, I explore how art world ecosystems develop and are maintained in accordance with local values and resources. With so many ecosystems that operate under the art world, artists have the agency to choose the environment in which they want to work, in accordance with their own practice and career goals. The Chicago and New York art world ecosystems and the distinct cultures around artistic production in each are created as a result of the variance of influence among their art world participants. For Chicago, the central concern is with supporting regional artists, with an emphasis on critical discourse and experimentation. New York's art world ecosystem developed along with other dominant industries in the city as one that is sustained through and heavily reliant on patronage, creating a complex cluster economy that allows all sectors of the arts to flourish. The intense competition between participants and within each participant sector allows for a high-level of development to occur, making New York home to leading institutions, organizations, and businesses who possess the agency to make a significant impact on an artist's career. Art world ecosystems develop and are maintained in accordance with local values and resources, which means the artists who live and work in these cities, and their works, are central in forming the character of each city that exists within the international art world. Ultimately, the artists and their artworks that emerge from the unique ecosystems influence the reputation of the city as part of the contemporary art world. A clear understanding of how ecosystems are formed and shaped ultimately gives artists agency to control their careers--allowing them to make informed decisions about where to live and work or where to exhibit their work to further their reputations and the distribution of their works.
