The main themes of this volume are the identification of 'visions', 'messages', and 'meanings' in various facets of Byzantine culture and the possible differences in the perception of these visions, messages and meanings as seen by their original audience and by modern scholars. The volume addresses the methodological question of how far interpretations should go - whether there is a tendency to read too much into too little or whether not enough attention is paid to apparent minutiae that may have been important in their historical context. As the essays span a wide chronological era, they also present a means of assessing the relative degrees of continuity and change in Byzantine visions, messages and meanings over time. Thus, as highlighted in the concluding section, the book discusses the validity of existing notions regarding the fluidity of Byzantine culture: when continuity was a matter of a rigid adherence to traditional values and when a manifestation of the ability to adapt old conventions to new circumstances, and it shows that in some respects, Byzantine cultural history may have been less fragmented than is usually assumed. Similarly, by reflecting not just on new interpretations, but also on the process of interpreting itself, the contributors demonstrate how research within Byzantine studies has evolved over the past thirty years from a set of narrowly defined individual disciplines into a broader exploration of interconnected cultural phenomena.

With the poems written by winner of the Posner Poetry Award from the Council of Wisconsin Writers in 2005, this coffee-table book will delight and inform general readers curious about ideas of chaos, fractals, and nonlinear complex systems. Developed out of ten years of interdisciplinary seminars in chaos and complex systems at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it features multiple ways of knowing: Robin Chapman's poems of everyday experience of change in a complex world, associated metaphorically with Julien Clinton Sprott's full-color computer art generated from billions of versions of only three simple equations for strange attractors, Julia sets, and iterated function systems; his definitions of 39 key terms; a mathematical appendix; and even a multiple-choice quiz to test understanding. Accompanied by a CD-ROM of the poet reading 13 poems and 1,000 images of chaos art from which slide shows can be generated and 100 high-resolution posters created, the book has a foreword by Cliff Pickover, author of A Passion for Mathematics.

The book examines the process of symbolic and material alteration of religious images in antiquity, the middle ages and the modern period. The process by which the form and meaning of images are modified and adapted for a new context is defined by a large number of spiritual, religious, artistic, geographical or historical circumstances. This book provides a defined theoretical framework for these symbolic and material alterations based on the concept of iconotropy; that is, the way in which images change and/or alter their meaning. Iconotropy is a key concept in religious history, particularly for periods in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. In addition, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images. Numerous accounts from antiquity, the middle ages and the modern period detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture and religious history.

Introducing a new holistic paradigm that provides a clear new pair of lens - for the mind. This new concept depolarizes our perceptions on reality by reconciling the ancient and deeply compelling paradox known as dualism. As it unravels the greatest mystery of our existential lives, that great enigma that in spirituality led us from “all good”, to good & evil; and in science, leads to two laws that we cannot reconcile. However, with this new pair of depolarizing lens, we are able to conceive something quite remarkable, space, time and how existing things are formed in it. This book is very relevant because it is antidote to the social and political ills of our societies. The polarization inherent in our present paradigm creates social diseases such as sexism, racism, wars, and the myriad forms of hate we tend to indulge in. We daily confront the ravages of political neglect that we are forced to bear, as we try to cope with these corrupted ways of being. The benefit of this new holistic paradigm is that it provides a logical, science-based understanding that is so obvious and universal, we are essentially oblivious to it; and, it resolves the greatest paradoxes we face as spiritual beings in a materialistic world. This book promotes well-being for the soul in the evolution of the mind. • Reveals the origin of the invisible field we call Space(Time) • Explains how existing things emerge and form into being • Sheds whole new light on the meaning of GOD • Reconciles the divides between Eastern and Western traditions in religion, science, and philosophy • Bridges Dualism (Separation & Polarization) • Self Actualization Meditations (“I AM ‘Mind’, I AM ‘Consciousness’”)

Certain Victory Images Of World War Ii In The Japanese Media written by David C. Earhart and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-01 with Business & Economics categories.

This unique window on history employs hundreds of images and written records from Japanese periodicals during World War II to trace the nation's transformation from a colorful, cosmopolitan empire in 1937 to a bleak "total war" society facing imminent destruction in 1945. The author draws upon his extensive collection of Japanese wartime publications to reconstruct the government-controlled media's narrative of the war's goals and progress - thus providing a close-up look at how the war was shown to Japanese on the home front. Many of these visual and written sources are rare in Japan and were previously unavailable in the West. Strikingly, the narrative remains consistent and convincing from victory to retreat, and even as defeat looms large. Earhart's nuanced reading of Japan's wartime media depicts a nation waging war against the world and a government terrorizing its own people. At once informed, scholarly, and readily accessible, this lavishly illustrated volume offers an accurate representation of the official Japanese narrative of the war in contemporary terms. The images are fresh and compelling, revealing a forgotten world by turns familiar and alien, beautiful and stark, poignant and terrifying.
