Archaeological research has long focused on studying tangible artifacts to build a picture of the cultures it examines. Equally important to understanding a culture, however, are the intangible elements that become part of its heritage. In 2003, UNESCO adopted a convention specifically to protect intangible heritage, including the following: oral traditions and expressions, including language; performing arts (such as traditional music, dance, and theater); social practices, rituals, and festive events; knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe; and traditional craftsmanship. Since this convention was adopted, scholars and preservationists have struggled with how to best approach intangible heritage. This volume specifically focuses on embodied intangible heritage, or the human body as a vehicle for memory, movement, and sound. The contributors to this work examine ritual and artistic movement, theater, music, oral literature, as well as the role of the internet in cultural transmission. Globalization and particularly the internet, has a complex effect on the transmission of intangible heritage: while music, dance, and other expressions are now shared easily, the performances often lack context and may be shared with a group that does not fully understand what they are seeing or hearing. This volume draws on case studies from around the world to examine the problems and possibilities of implementing the new UNESCO convention. The findings in this volume will be vital to both professionals and academics in anthropology, archaeology, history, museum studies, architecture, and anyone else who deals with issues of cultural heritage and preservation.

This edited book examines the significance of intangible cultural heritage to local communities and the state in Hong Kong and China. Through ethnographic studies, the various chapters in this edited book argue for the role of the local community in the creation and conservation of the intangible cultural heritage and traditions. Irrespective of whether they are selected and listed as regional, national or UNESO intangible cultural heritage, they are part of the living traditions unique to that particular local community. This edited book argues that there are threefold significance of intangible cultural heritage to the local community and the state. First, intangible cultural heritage is seen as a social prestige. Second, it acts as socio-cultural and economic capital for members of the community to tap into to ensure socio-cultural and economic sustainability of the community. Finally, the intangible cultural heritage serves as a depository of the collective memories of the community, linking the past to the present and the future.

This book describes the global legal framework for safeguarding the “Intangible Cultural Heritage” – as defined by the UNESCO Convention in 2003 – and analyses its use in selected countries in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. Chinese knotting means the joining of two cords. The cord is originally braided by our ancestors as a tool to bind and tie with knots. The knot is also an ancient means of recording, which is the precursor of Chinese characters. "Cord" in Chinese sounds similar to "God" in the language, and the shape of a cord is similar to that of a Chinese dragon, so the knot is considered sacred. Then the knot gradually evolves into a kind of decoration, which is endowed with the connotation of beauty. The Chinese knot is also a relatively common handicraft in our modern life, so it is named "Chinese knot." There are numerous ways of tying Chinese knots and their materials are various. Besides different types of cords, the materials could be paper strips, cloth strips, or even reed leaves. The Chinese knotting methods are countless. A seemingly simple cord can be transformed into a variety of objects through simple or complicated knotting. Each basic knot is made by weaving a single rope from the beginning to the end. After continuously and orderly shuttling and winding in between the rows of ropes, the rope forms symmetric knot ornaments, whose obverse and reverse sides are the same. Besides, the two ends of the rope are connected, and it seems the knots have no beginning or ending. The Chinese knots are tight bound, so they are unlikely to become loose when binding things. Therefore, they are very practical. The Chinese knots can be divided into three categories: basic knots, derivative knots, and combination knots. Apart from the skill required to master a variety of basic knotting techniques, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of each knot in order to make changes and combinations, or even to innovate new knots. Because of their unique oriental charm, and magical and various changes, Chinese knots attract more and more people. Like Chinese paintings, sculptures, and ceramics, Chinese knots are easily recognizable by foreigners nowadays. Chinese knots are unadorned, solemn, and elegant. People also name them after their shapes and symbolic meanings. The lucky knot implies auspiciousness and good luck. The Panchang knot represents continuation and longevity. The double coin knot means that good things happen in pairs and that the source of wealth is abundant. Each knot offers sincere blessings and great wishes. The Chinese knot is not only graceful and rich in implications, but also a valuable cultural heritage of the Chinese nation. It reflects the spiritual connotation of the Chinese nation to some extent. As part of the precious national cultural heritage, Chinese knotting is expected to flourish and add warmth and blessings to people's lives, as well as to bring joy and satisfaction to the makers.
