A unique and indispensable reference work Unsurpassed in content and scope When the first edition of Gold Coins of the World made its debut in 1958, it forever changed the way gold coins were collected, cataloged, traded, and priced. For the first time, one book provided a reliable guide for a subject which previously required an often expensive investment in multiple volumes of literature, some of it rare and antique, and much of it badly out-of-date. With the publication of this pioneering work, Robert Friedberg (1912-1963) established himself as an international icon in the field of numismatic literature. This book, and the 'Friedberg Numbering System' he developed became then, and is still today, the internationally-recognized standard for systematically identifying any gold coin ever made. From just 384 pages in 1958, Gold Coins of the World has expanded to the extent that it now contains more than triple the information of its ancestor. It still stands alone as the first and only book to describe, catalog and price two millennia of gold, platinum, and palladium coin issues from across the globe. From the first coins of the ancient Greeks to the most recently-issued modern commemoratives, they are all here, an astonishing compilation of more than 21,000 individual coin listings accompanied by over 8,000 actual-size photographs. The prices have been completely updated, for the most part raised substantially, to reflect the current market. Entire sections have been expanded, many illustrations have been added or improved, and hundreds of new discoveries and recent issues have been included for the first time. Arthur Friedberg, president of the International Association of Professional Numismatists from 2001 to 2007 and now its Honorary President, and Ira Friedberg, have completely revised and expanded their late father's work. They have had the valuable assistance and cooperation of a who's who of the leading numismatists on every continent in bringing this edition to fruition. For the numismatist, banker, economist, historian, institution of higher learning, or a fancier of the noble metal in all its forms, Gold Coins of the World is a book for every library, public and private.

Excerpt from Catalogue of the Magnificent Collection of United States and Pioneer Gold Coins of Mr. Charles W. Cowell, Denver, Colorado: Including Some of the Greatest Rarities; Kellogg and Co. $50 Gold; Wass, Molitor $50 Gold; Complete Set Pikes Peak Coins, Including the 1850 $20, With View of Peak Mr. Chas. W. Cowell, now past his seventieth year, is one of the very first numismatists of this country and one of the Pioneer col lectors of the Pioneer gold coins, of which his collection is so rich in many of the greatest gems of this most interesting series.. He is a close student of the gold mint marks and of the minor varieties; and to his close study of all coins that come into his possession are due several discoveries of varieties heretofore unknown; chiefly among which is the excessively rare 1834 half-eagle with crossed four, - a variety Mr. Cowell discovered a few years ago. Mr. Cowell was most actively engaged in forming this collection years ago, and, of course, had the opportunity to secure the finest Specimens, as a careful perusal of this catalogue will readily show. While it is quite impossible to mention the numerous rarities of this collection in the preface, yet, it will not be out of place to call special attention to just a few of the greater rarities. In the pioneer series will be found some of the greatest rarities, - the Kellogg co. Gold piece, of which only thirteen specimens are known, is the gem of the collection; the Wass, Molitor and the three other varieties Of octagon gold pieces are about as fine as found; the Pikes Peak coins include the exceedingly rare 1860 and form the only and first complete set offered at auction; the Mormon coins, Miners' Bank, Norris, Griggs Norris and the many beautiful and rare Carolina and Georgia coins; also the largest collection Of California gold dollars, halves and quarter-dollars ever Offered. In United States gold, with the exception of the early half-eagles, the collection is nearly complete. And as regards the Mint Marks, this is, I believe, the most complete collection ever offered. Excerpt from Catalog of the Valuable Collection of United States Gold and Silver Coins of the Late Charles Gordon Zug, Esq., Of Pittsburgh In his early boyhood, the late Charles Gordon Zug, began his collection of coins, and gave much attention to the interesting study of his country's coinage. He was born in Pittsburg, June 10th, 1872, and died at the age of 36 years, August 10, 1908, from heart failure caused by over-exertion through excessive bicycle riding while a lad. He was engaged in the iron manufacturing business with his father in Pittsburg. During the last years of his life he turned his atten tion particularly to the United States Gold Series, and though lacking a few of the higher rareties, he formed a splendid collection of the mint series of gold coins - the Eagles, including the rare 1798 and 1804, the Half Eag les, 1823, '25 and '30, and the Quarter Eagles, 1796, '97, 1821 and '26; Three Dollars - the rareties of 1865, '73 and '76, the last a brilliant proof, and his complete set of Dollars. He added largely to this series at my sale of the great collection of the late David S. Wilson, March, 1907, where Mr. Zug was one of the largest buyers, his purchases amounting to $3000, and I have preserved the record of the previous ownership of the pieces from this collection, by referring to this source in the present Catalogue. I can supply a few copies of the Wilson Sale Catalogue with price list at and with plates at the latter illustrating many additional coins of the Zug Sale. The Wilson Collection contained 600 pieces of U. S. Gold, and is the largest sale of the series ever held. He had not added much to the Silver Series during recent years, but it contains both varieties of the very rare 1796 Half Dollar in good condition.
