In this comprehensive and gorgeously illustrated book, Cathy Scott and Clay Myers show how service and therapy dogs are having a profound impact on the lives of military personnel injured in action. Not only do our veterans deal with physical injuries, but they often return with psychological issues that can be treated with help, companionship, and love from working canines. Through moving stories and color photographs, Unconditional Honor highlights the nearly forty-year history of working dogs helping wounded veterans, the mental and physical combat traumas that are mitigated by the dogs, the selection and training of the dogs, including rescued canines, and what the future holds. Featured in the book are inspiring personal accounts of what the dogs mean to veterans, and how their lives have been forever changed and even saved since adopting canines. In addition to the remarkable healing journeys of wounded warriors and their canines, this book showcases the various groups, formed originally to train dogs for the blind and the physically disabled that now embrace military services, that provide, at no cost, returning troops with dogs to make them whole again after surviving the reality of war.

The literary study of emotion is part of an important revisionary movement among scholars eager to recast emotional politics for the twenty-first century. Looking beyond the traditional categories of sentiment, sensibility, and sympathy, Jennifer Travis suggests a new approach to reading emotionalism among men. She argues that the vocabulary of injury, with its evaluations of victimhood and its assessments of harm, has deeply influenced the cultural history of emotions. From the Civil War to the early twentieth century, Travis traces the history of male emotionalism in American discourse. She argues that injury became a comfortable vocabulary--particularly among white middle-class men--through which to articulate and to claim a range of emotional wounds. The debates about injury that flourished in the cultural arenas of medicine, psychology, and the law spilled over into the realm of fiction, as Travis demonstrates through readings of works by Stephen Crane, William Dean Howells, Willa Cather, Henry James, and Edith Wharton. Travis concludes by linking this history to twenty-first-century preoccupations with "pain-centered politics," which, she cautions, too often focuses only on women and racial minorities.

Set in the sixteenth century village of Gruica's Bridge in Eastern Herzegovina, near the Adriatic Sea, "Wounded Dove in Honor and Disgrace" explores the long struggle for human understanding in the midst of the political and social collision between the Muslim and Christian civilizations. The spirited Angelina-wife to Delimir and mother to their young son, Predrag-refuses to be daunted by the pressures imposed upon her life. To ensure her husband's release from the Ottoman Turkish dungeons and save her family's honor, she is prepared to take drastic measures by crossing the boundaries of both convention and natural law. Through the portrayal of a tradition in turmoil, Angelina represents the grave sorrow of the oppressed women of the era. Her struggle for survival in the male-dominated world and her reaction to overwhelming conditions-imposed upon her by the Ottoman Turks from without and by the outlawed slave-traders from within-highlight a search for inner peace rarely found in a ruptured soul. Rich in history, tradition and emotion, "Wounded Dove in Honor and Disgrace" brings alive the reality of life where both Ottoman Turks and Christians were victims of the circumstances surrounding them.

By focusing on the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf -- and powerfully linking it to our lives today -- this comprehensive resource offers a compelling approach to observing Lent that truly prepares worshipers to experience Easter's new hope, new possibilities, and new life. Based on the ancient tradition of the five wounds of Christ, Wounded For Us identifies places where we find ourselves hurting, then connects them to one of the wounds Jesus suffered and explores how Christ's resurrection offers reconciliation and healing. Wounded For Us draws an imaginative analogy between Jesus' wounds and these areas in our lives where we are wounded: * Head (crown of thorns) -- our thoughts * Side (piercing) -- our spirit and emotions * Back (scourging) -- our hopes and dreams * Hands (nails) -- our relationships * Feet (nails) -- our actions With sermon and worship material for Ash Wednesday, the Sundays in Lent, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday, Wounded For Us provides a complete package with everything needed for developing meaningful, thematically unified services throughout the Lenten season. Each sermon suggests an action plan that applies the "cure" of the gospel to our wounds, and reproducible outlines that help the congregation focus on the main themes are also included. C. David Hogsett served several congregations in the North Indiana conference of the United Methodist Church during nearly four decades of active ministry. Hogsett holds degrees from Purdue University (B.S. in math), Southern Methodist University's Perkins School of Theology (B.D., S.T.M.), and McCormick Theological Seminary (D.Min.).

Set in the sixteenth century Village of Gruica's Bridge in Eastern Herzegovina, Wounded Dove in Honor and Disgrace explores an age long struggle for human understanding between the Muslim and Christian civilizations in the midst of political and social upheaval. Through the portrayal of a tradition in turmoil, it clearly points to grave sorrow the oppressed women of that time had to endure. It depicts their struggle for survival in the dominant male world and their reaction to overwhelming conditions, imposed upon them by the Ottoman Turks from the outside, and by the outlawed slave-traders from within. Angelina, the wounded dove in this story achieves some extraordinary things. Restrictions inherent in the traditional codes of behavior of her own people do not make her life any easier. Numerous adversities force Angelina to take charge of her life and to undertake drastic measures in order to ensure her husband's release from the Turkish Bey's dungeons and to save her family's honor.
