Das Ziel dieses streitbaren Essays ist hoch gesteckt: Es geht um die Verteidigung der Idee und der Institution Universität als Stätte der freien Forschung und Lehre gegen die Anmaßungen einer vermeintlich progressiven Neuordnung der akademischen Ausbildung nach dem Bologna-Reformmodell. Die heutige Zivilgesellschaft braucht unabhängige Universitäten als Institutionen der kritischen Erkenntnis in den Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften. Diese Erkenntnis strukturiert die Lehre und Forschung der freien Universität, nicht die positive Wissensvermittlung mit praktischer Zielsetzung in der Marktverwertung. »Wozu noch Universitäten?« verfolgt am Leitfaden der Unterscheidung von akkumulierbarem Wissen und kreativer Erkenntnis die Lehre und Forschung von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. Die Antike mit ihren vielen naturwüchsigen Wissenschaften bildete die Grundlage der mittelalterlichen Universitäten, die im 19. Jahrhundert zwar formal in der Vier-Fakultäten-Ordnung weiter bestanden, sich jedoch faktisch in die duale Anlage von Natur- und Geistes- oder Kulturwissenschaften verwandelte. Heute treten an die Stelle fester Fächerordnungen häufig föderative Bündnisse, die sich um die Lösung neuer Probleme bemühen. - Die Zäsur von 1968 führte zur Einebnung der Differenz zwischen den der Erkenntnis gewidmeten Universitäten einerseits und den an der Praxis orientierten Hochschulen andererseits. Die sog. Bologna-Reformen nach 1999 schließlich waren der Vorwand für eine bürokratische Betonierung des Studiums auf Provinzniveau. Das Versagen von »Bologna« ist offenkundig, schon das Bezugsfeld Europa ist für die Wissenschaft, die weltweit denkt und vernetzt ist, eine eklatante Fehlleistung. Die Universität sollte sich behutsam befreien von der - pädagogisch zubereiteten - Zwangsordnung und ihr die eigenen Maßstäbe in Forschung und Lehre entgegen stellen. Kritische Erkenntnis und Begründung sind der Kern der weltweiten Universitäten, wie jede Zivilgesellschaft sie braucht und vom Staat einfordern kann.
