Wrath in Burma is the story of General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell in the difficult China-Burma-India theater during World War 2. Stilwell was unrelenting and worked tirelessly to build the Chinese Army, despite severe limitations of men, supplies, support, and cooperation from his superiors. Stilwell's mission was to exert all possible pressure to make the Chinese and British fight the Japanese, and Wrath in Burma is the account of that mission, with all its treachery, courage and eventual heartbreak.

"This dissertation investigates the relationship between the emergence of Islamophobia, the contemporaneous rise of ultranationalism, and British colonial policy in 1930s Burma. Though scholars agree that Burmese Islamophobia first appeared in the colonial period, they have not yet explained why. My research reveals that Islamophobia emerged in interwar Burma as a result of ultranationalist attempts to blame Indians and Muslims for political and economic crisis. The colonial agribusiness economy, mainly focused on the monocropping of rice, collapsed when the global rice price dropped dramatically in the Great Depression. Meanwhile, the vast contract labor system of the British Indian Ocean had brought millions of low-wage Indian migrants to Burma, causing a glut in the labor market and damaging negotiation power for Burmese workers. Responding to these problems caused by imperialism and global capitalism, socialism rose as a popular response in the Burmese anti-colonial movement. To compete, a nascent fascist movement appealed to the rising sense of Burmese nationalism to depict Indians and the religion of Islam as the exploiters, colonizers, and invaders causing all of Burma's problems. By conflating the categories of Indian, colonizer, and Muslim, Burmese fascists inflamed hatred against Indian-Muslims, Indian-Hindus, and even Burmese-Muslims, such as the indigenous Rohingya minority. Ultimately, the British colonial government focused its repression on the socialists, thus encouraging and amplifying the efforts of the fascists. Therefore, I argue that the British ruling class amplified and propped up Burmese fascism because it shifted revolutionary hostility from the colonial state to a racialized minority. This work makes interventions into three primary fields. First, by examining the origins of Burmese Islamophobia, it challenges the authority of Islamophobic tropes developed in the colonial period as well as revealing the origins of these tropes as part of a concerted Burmese fascist movement. Second, it intervenes into studies of India and the Indian diaspora by demonstrating that the administrative separation of Burma and India by the British, and the resulting pogroms, discrimination, and eventual exodus suffered by Indians in Burma, represents a "First Partition" of India. And finally, it provides a case study for asking what kinds of subversion challenge authority, and what kinds uphold it. Ultranationalism and fascism in 1930s Burma served only to "divide and rule;" racial hatred distracted from the structural causes of impoverishment and disenfranchisement: unrestricted capitalism and colonial rule. This conclusion has significant implications for studying colonialism and anti-colonial movements in the British Empire, in the Indian Ocean world, and in the decolonized world as a whole"--Author's abstract.
