A helpful, engaging guide to the revision of scholarly writing by an editor and award-winning author “Pamela Haag has been called ‘the tenure whisperer’ for good reason. It’s pure gold for all aspiring nonfiction writers.”—Nancy MacLean, author of Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America Writing and revision are two different skills. Many scholar-writers have learned something about how to write, but fewer know how to read and revise their own writing, spot editorial issues, and transform a draft from passable to great. Drawing on before and after examples from more than a decade as a developmental editor of scholarly works, Pamela Haag tackles the most common challenges of scholarly writing. This book is packed with practical, user-friendly advice and is written with warmth, humor, sympathy, and flair. With an inspiring passion for natural language, Haag demonstrates how to reconcile clarity with intellectual complexity. Designed to be an in-the-trenches desktop reference, this indispensable resource can help scholars develop a productive self-editing habit, advise their graduate and other students on style, and, ultimately, get their work published and praised.

With rousing enthusiasm, David Michael Kaplan introduces you to his unique brand of revision: a process of discovery in which your story's words, structure, even its very meaning may change as it grows stronger. He takes you through every stage of the writing process, providing strategies and criteria to help pinpoint the problems in your work and fix them. In addition to illustrating his points with examples from contemporary writers, Kaplan traces the evolution of three of his own stories from journal entries to first (and subsequent) drafts to finished pieces. He shows the changes he made - from single words to entire characters and story lines - and explains why he made them.

This book contributes to the field of L2 writing, with a focus on instruction in revision. Theoretically, this research provides a better understanding of students’ metacognitive knowledge about revision and their self-efficacy for text revision in EFL writing; such understanding is vital to make pedagogical connections between cognitive research, self-efficacy theory and instructional research in writing. Moreover, the designed questionnaire for data collection and analysis in this study can be employed as a diagnostic or consciousness-raising tool in the L2 writing classrooms or be used as a research tool to chart the development of students’ metacognitive knowledge about revision and self-efficacy for text revision over time to contribute to this line of research. Pedagogically, this study examined the effects of the SRSD model, an approach that has shown its effectiveness in improving learners’ metacognition and impacting their self-efficacy in both L1 and L2 writing, in the context of revision in an EFL context. Hence, it broadens the understanding of the feasibility and effectiveness of the SRSD model.
