The story of the Wuhan Union Hospital is a remarkable story. It began in 1866 founded by a non-medical Christian preacher as a small 50 bedded unit which expanded to a fully functioning 240 bedded contemporary hospital by 1928. It withstood massive flooding by the bursting of the Yangtse River defences in 1931, the incessant Japanese bombing in 1937-8 and the Japanese occupation and eviction of staff and patients from the premises from 1942 until Japan's surrender. Added to all that the Hospital had to cope with Allied bombing in 1944 but it survived until the War's end. The change from multiple private donations to State control was far from smooth. In 1950 the fundamental ideology of Marxist Communism was very different from the Christian philosophy that had started the institution. However alongside the research, teaching and specialisation; the high standard of care and concern for the individual patient has remained the same.

During the period of 1920-1930, British Protestant and American missionaries engaged in many cultural activities in China, which in many ways, helped to promote China's modernization and development as a nation. In this thought-provoking study, Cui examines the missions' contributions to Chinese medical services, educational systems, and social reform, including the missionaries' influence on Chinese women's emancipation through missionary work. In making this assessment of the positive cultural achievements of the Protestant missionaries and their unique role in promoting China's progress and modernization, the author contradicts many traditional accounts by Chinese scholars. Recommended for all scholars of Chinese and East Asian history.

Covid 19 Airway Management And Ventilation Strategy For Critically Ill Older Patients written by Nicola Vargas and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-25 with Medical categories.

This book describes the issues and challenges that clinicians encountered in the management of older critically ill patients during the Covid-19 pandemic, and offers practical information on how to manage them. Older adults are more susceptible to complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as a result of viral pneumonia. In addition, they often have multiple comorbidities and are commonly frail, which means their various organs and systems, such as the respiratory system, have reduced functional reserves. As such, older adults are less able to react to acute stressors. During the current Covid-19 pandemic, older adult patients' mortality is increased. Further, the infection and death rates of elderly people in nursing homes and health care institutions are high. Management of older adults with Covid is complicated. The reduced availability of beds may limit their access to ICU. Moreover, the prognosis may be poor, and airway management and ventilation strategies have to take into account various clinical and physiological characteristics specific to older patients. This book is addressed to all allied professionals involved in the management of older critically ill patients and presents information collected and practical lessons learned from the clinical daily management of this population during the pandemic.

It also provides a detailed analysis of the historical development of China's healthcare system, the current state of its broad reforms, and the uneasy balance between China's market-driven approach and governmental regulation. Most importantly, it devotes considerable attention to the major problems confronting China, including chronic illness, public health, and long-term care and economic security for the elderly.
