Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo es bien conocido por sus escritos sobre la colonización de América. Sin embargo, los intereses de Oviedo como cronista no se limitaron a los territorios ultramarinos: un porcentaje nada desdeñable de su amplia trayectoria literaria está dedicado a la historia política y nobiliaria de los reinos de la Península Ibérica. Esta obra, llamada Prisión del Rey de Francia, forma parte de esta segunda faceta historiográfica. En ella se narran las vicisitudes más relevantes del reinado de Carlos V durante el periodo comprendido entre 1525 y 1533. En concreto, Oviedo centra su relato en tres hechos fundamentales: la batalla de Pavía, la boda del Emperador con Isabel de Portugal y el segundo cerco de Viena. Para su edición, Jorge Martín García recupera un testimonio apógrafo guardado en la Biblioteca Nacional, editándolo con el rigor filológico adecuado. La edición cuenta con un extenso aparato interpretativo y crítico, que trata de aclarar los distintos problemas textuales del codex unicus, al tiempo que informa a los lectores acerca de los referentes históricos y culturales presentes en la Prisión del Rey de Francia. El estudio preliminar busca analizar los entresijos del texto mediante el examen de los mecanismos retóricos empleados por Oviedo para cimentar un discurso tan atrayente como adoctrinador. A este respecto, se ha tenido en cuenta la posición del manuscrito dentro de la producción escrita de su autor, en especial aquellos aspectos relativos a la destacada querencia de este por el imaginario cortesano-caballeresco.
