La longue traque se poursuit d'un album à l'autre et Jean Van Hamme distille peu à peu les informations sur le passé du héros, qui semble lié à l'histoire récente de son pays. Le scénario, qui mêle aventure et fiction à l'histoire de ces vingt dernières années, est mis en image par William Vance. Son trait réaliste et précis apporte une crédibilité totale et campe un héros sympathique, attachant et énigmatique à la fois. Après un bref passage dans l'hebdomadaire SPIROU en 1984-85, les aventures de XIII paraissent directement en albums chez Dargaud à un rythme régulier d'un album par an. Cette série s'impose déjà en quelques années comme un best-seller et se positionne comme un classique.
