It has been predicted that soon most of the stored data will be in XML format. It is therefore critical that efficient and scalable XML warehousing techniques should exist. Historical information is often needed to answer queries for business decision support. Therefore, it is imperative that the data contained in chronological versions of the multi-versioned XML document be stored in an efficient data warehouse. Most of the existing research work investigates warehousing techniques only for static XML documents, where the redundancy of information (which is specific to dynamic XML documents with multiple versions) is not considered. There is some work in the management of multi-versioned XML documents, but this is limited to determining changes between consecutive versions and the proposal of empirical storage policies. Consequently, the first part of this thesis investigates and proposes a framework for warehousing dynamic (multi-versioned) XML documents.

Data warehousing is an important application of database technology. Even though XML is ubiquitous and there are many XML databases, there are almost no XML data warehouses today. When the information to be represented naturally has multiple dimensions, as in data warehouses, fundamental tensions appear in the modeling and schema design. This book propose an evolutionary extension of the XML data model into a multi-dimensional model, called the Multi-Colored Trees (MCT) logical data model. MCT permits trees with multi-colored nodes to signify participation in multiple dimensions. Algorithms are developed to transform design specifications given as ER diagrams into MCT schemas. Bitmap join indices are extended to the XML context. This book demonstrates experimentally the benefit for typical queries, including those with low cardinality or high selectivity. The book also considers the data cube, and shows that it cannot readily be expressed or evaluated for XML data. Specifically, XML data is not always summarizable because of missing and repeated sub-elements.

Recently, we have seen a steep increase in the popularity and adoption of XML, in areas such as traditional databases, e-business, the scientific environment, and on the web. Querying XML documents and data efficiently is a challenging issue; this book approaches search on XML data by combining content-based methods from information retrieval and structure-based XML query methods and presents the following parts: applications, query languages, retrieval models, implementing intelligent XML systems, and evaluation. To appreciate the book, basic knowledge of traditional database technology, information retrieval, and XML is needed. The book is ideally suited for courses or seminars at the graduate level as well as for education of research and development professionals working on Web applications, digital libraries, database systems, and information retrieval.

ABSTRACT (cont.): Specifically, the components described in this research are as follows: 1. A decision module for determining whether a given user query can or should be answered using the contents in the data warehouse or whether it needs to be submitted to the sources; 2. An XMLQL-2-SQL query translator for converting user queries against the integrated, XML-based view of the underlying sources into equivalent queries against the relational warehouse schema; and 3. A maintenance query generator for monitoring the hit-rate of the data warehouse and for generating maintenance queries to the sources whose results will refresh the warehouse contents to provide optimal support for user queries. The IWiz prototype system including the above mentioned WHM components is currently installed and undergoing extensive testing in the Database Research and Development Center at the University of Florida.

XML is one of the most common standards for the exchange of information. However, organizations find challenges in how to address the complexities of dealing with hierarchical data types, particularly as they scale to gigabytes and beyond. In this IBM® Redbooks® publication, we discuss and describe the new capabilities in IBM InfoSphere® DataStage® 8.5. These capabilities enable developers to more easily manage the design and processing requirements presented by the most challenging XML sources. Developers can use these capabilities to create powerful hierarchical transformations and to parse and compose XML data with high performance and scalability. Spanning both batch and real-time run times, these capabilities can be used to solve a broad range of business requirements. As part of the IBM InfoSphere Information Server 8.5 release, InfoSphere DataStage was enhanced with new hierarchical transformation capabilities called . XML Stage provides native XML schema support and powerful XML transformation functionality. These capabilities are based on a unique state-of-the-art technology that allows you to parse and compose any complex XML structure from and to a relational form, as well as to a separate hierarchical form. This book is targeted at an audience of systems designers and developers who focus on implementing XML integration support in their environments.
