Este libro analiza y describe el desarrollo teórico-político de los partidos de la izquierda chilena durante la dictadura militar a partir de una extensa recopilación documental (en su mayoría clandestina e inédita). Se analizan, básicamente, cuatro organizaciones: Partido Socialista de Chile (PSCh), Partido Comunista de Chile (PCCh), el Movimiento Acción Popular Unitaria (MAPU) y la Izquierda Cristiana (IC), más un conjunto de movimientos, convergencias y grupos a favor de la renovación. El estudio está dividido en tres etapas: «Bajo el contexto de la represión, la autocrítica y las (re)definiciones (1973-1979)»; «Entre nuevas convergencia y divergencia. Trazando el camino de la renovación (1979-1983)»; «De la incertidumbre a la consolidación de la izquierda renovada (1983-1990)». ¿Qué ocurrió con los partidos de la izquierda posterior a la derrota de la UP en 1973 y cómo fue su evolución hasta el regreso de la democracia (1990)? El presente libro intenta explicar, justamente, paso a paso, su evolución política, definida, sin duda alguna, por el indiscutible y categórico proceso revisionista que sacudió poderosamente a la izquierda chilena, la cual convergió (el grueso de ella) años más tarde en la Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia.
