Jackie, born of medical missionaries in China during World War II, rejected her connection to her birth country growing up because it made her different. A return to China with her parents in 1980, however, is life-changing. After always having known her mother as distant and emotionally abusive, she is stunned to see a loving side to her for the first time—and pleasantly surprised by the affinity she feels for her birth country. These revelations launch Jackie on a quest to understand her difficult childhood and who she is beyond “wife,” “mother,” and “daughter.” Her journey takes her first to the mountainous landscapes of Alaska, where she finds a passion for nature and begins a thirty-five-year environmental career. As she builds her life there and later in New England, she makes multiple trips to her birth country—with her parents, alone, and with her adult children. Each of these trips provides a benchmark for the growth and transformation she undergoes as she learns to create the authentic life she craves. Deeply reflective and sensitively rendered, Whispers from the Valley of the Yak touches on the healing power of nature and universal themes of unconditional love and forgiveness—and, most importantly, being true to oneself.

A Colored Families Dream written by Sam Eatmon and has been published by Xlibris Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-22 with Family & Relationships categories.

It is a culmination of experiences ranging from periods of feeling uncertain and overwhelmed. “I couldn’t sleep sometimes for the wounds were fresh.” And times I didn’t want to continue because I felt empty and nothing more to give and on the brink of discouragement. Then, I remembered walking out on the front porch where my granddad uses to speak with me. He uttered, Son, be a good boy and sit down and listen. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal and endowed by God to have certain rights without debate. And some of them are liberty, life, and a right to be happy! It’s, Coming! It’s, Coming! All men are born free and equal. Among them may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and possession protecting the family. Daddy was always caught saying “Boys we got to keep the peace” he offered no provocation to make us enemies. Yet, I saw southern society treat our family so bad people left us no alternatives but servitude or death. We failed to understand that two kinds of justice were operating “down home” at that time. It seemed when men talk of liberty, they mean their own and seldom suffer thoughts to stray to their neighbors. The Colored men seem to suffer most interpersonally. I felt less than human and it made me angry and difficult to get along without adequate coping skills. So many minority men injured those closest to them.

No Way Back Home written by Miki Hruska and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-22 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In 1938, when faced with a decision to work at a shoe company in India or stay in Czechoslovakia and wait for another war, Miki Hruska’s newly married parents opted to move, thinking they would return home in a few years. But they would not be able to return “home” for another four decades; instead, home became Calcutta, where they raised their family and established a business during a parade of turbulent social and political events. The ill-planned departure of the British from India and their bungled attempts at Partition engendered riots and killings that brought bloodshed to the family’s front door. And when the Communists took over the government of West Bengal, they brought labour disruptions that made it next to impossible to operate the family business. This riveting family memoir is set during the cataclysmic events of WWII and its aftermath, giving a harrowing yet heartwarming portrait of life for a migrant Czech family and showing how perseverance and love can sustain people through the darkest of times.

2018 Colorado Book Awards finalist in Creative Nonfiction, andNational Bestseller and Honorable Mention Award Winner in the Outdoor Literature category of the 2017 National Outdoor Book Awards (NOBA) “A beautiful book about family and finding a way to achieve more than you ever thought possible.” —Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author Erik Weihenmayer is the first and only blind person to summit Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Descending carefully, he and his team picked their way across deep crevasses and through the deadly Khumbu Icefall; when the mountain was finally behind him, Erik knew he was going to live. His expedition leader slapped him on the back and said something that would affect the course of Erik’s life: “Don’t make Everest the greatest thing you ever do.” No Barriers is Erik’s response to that challenge. It is the moving story of his journey since descending Mount Everest: from leading expeditions around the world with blind Tibetan teenagers to helping injured soldiers climb their way home from war, from adopting a son from Nepal to facing the most terrifying reach of his life: to solo kayak the thunderous whitewater of the Grand Canyon. Along the course of Erik’s journey, he meets other trailblazers—adventurers, scientists, artists, and activists—who, despite trauma, hardship, and loss, have broken through barriers of their own. These pioneers show Erik surprising ways forward that surpass logic and defy traditional thinking. Like the rapids of the Grand Canyon, created by inexorable forces far beneath the surface, No Barriers is a dive into the heart and mind at the core of the turbulent human experience. It is an exploration of the light that burns in all of us, the obstacles that threaten to extinguish that light, and the treacherous ascent towards growth and rebirth.
