Pokok perhatian buku ini adalah sejarah dan ingatan yang dirangkum dalam sebuah bingkai foto yang disimpan oleh Mandingin, ayah angkatku di Banda Eli, desa dimana saya melaksanakan penelitian lapangan pada rentang tahun 1994 hingga 1996. Pria itu berdiri menghadap kamera, mengenakan mantel dan sarung panjang, di sebelahnya terdapat bungabunga yang tertata, mengenakan kacamata bulat dan sorban berwarna cerah. Wajah kurusnya memancarkan kematangan dan ketenangan bukan usia lanjut. Pakaian pria ini dan dekorasi di sekitarnya mengindikasikan bahwa foto ini merujuk pada periode akhir dari masa kolonial. Inilah gambar dari Fidin, ayah Mandingin, diambil sekitar tahun 1949 di Makassar, ibu kota baru di Timur Indonesia, beberapa saat sebelum Fidin meninggal dalam peziarahannya ke Mekah. Manakala saya melihat gambar ini bersama dengan Mandingin, terasa bagaikan ringkasan signifikan dari sejarah dan biografi masa lampau. Peristiwa dalam foto ini tak hanya merupakan titik tertinggi dari kehidupan pribadi Fidin tapi juga bertepatan dengan akhir penarikan Belanda dari koloni bentukan mereka. Persatuan Republik belumlah sepenuhnya terwujudkan; pembukaan negara terhadap negara-negara merdeka dan dunia Islam masih diantisipasi dan diperebutkan. Foto ini berlatar belakang kesadaran tentang figur seorang ayah yang tak pernah kembali dari perjalanannya. Sebagai sebuah sarana untuk mengenang, foto ini menitikberatkan sebuah relasi sosial yang terhenti, sebuah ingatan langka yang menciptakan lewatnya hasrat untuk berkomunikasi dengan “pancaran sejarah” (Runia 2007:322). Bukannya kewalahan karena perubahan sejarah atas mereka, keturunan Fidin tetap memelihara mereka dari jauh dengan potret sebagai peristiwa dan pribadi pendiri. Karenanya orang-orang sebagaimana yang digambarkan dalam buku ini, dipersatukan dengan sejarah melalui seorang pribadi, figur nenek moyang yang dari padanyalah kemungkinan untuk mengungkap lebih dalam eksistensi dan kesadaran atas pengalaman hidup yang berlimpah. Dalam artian tersebut, sejarah kembali pada apa yang disebutkan oleh Janet Hoskins (1993: 308) sebagai ‘warisan’ – sekumpulan prosedur pengulangan masa lalu yang memungkinkan pemulihan dan perubahan eksistensial sosial dalam lintasan waktu. Fokus utama saya adalah pada kisah menarik dari sebuah perjalanan jarak jauh, sebuah perpindahan antara waktu dan tempat yang berbeda. Foto Fidin mencontohkan sebuah puisi spesial dari kehadiran, yang bagi sebagian kerabatnya, menyediakan dasar dari ingatan dan harapan dari kehadiran intersubjektif. Lagu-lagu dan kisah-kisah mengenai perjalanan seperti ini memotivasi dan memungkinkan perjalanan aktual ke tempat-tempat yang jauh, mempertahankan sebuah keterlibatan antara komunitas dalam skala kecil dan arena sejarah serta peristiwa politis yang besar. Pertanyaan yang kiranya dapat dialamatkan kepada buku ini adalah seberapa personalkah, pengalaman hidup yang bersejarah: apakah narasi ini mengukur waktu yang dalamnya sejarah dan ingatan terpotong? Dalam hubungan dengan itu, isu yang dekat dengan pertanyaan ini adalah apakah bentuk tindakan yang tersedia bagi masyarakat untuk mendorong sela-sela peristiwa politis yang lebih besar. Ke dalam tingkat apakah ini semua dapat membangun dan memeroleh kembali peran kolektif mereka dalam situasi sejarah kemudian?
