Kiwirrkurra community is a small Aboriginal community of about 150 people in the remote Great Sandy Desert bioregion of Western Australia. Some people claim it is the most remote community in Australia. The Kiwirrkurra ladies who are the main authors of this book (Nolia, Yalti, Josephine, Payu, Yakari, Nyanyuma, Mantua, Kim, Sally, and Monica) belong to the country surrounding their community. They are connected to it by tjukurrpa (traditional law and dreaming), by ancestry and by a deep and intimate knowledge. The seeds for the idea of a Kiwirrkurra bush foods book came about in 2015. The Kiwirrkurra traditional owners had dedicated their land as an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) the year before and had just put in place an active land management program in which Kiwirrkurra people would work to look after their country, culture, and people. Two of the non-Indigenous authors of this book were already working closely with the Kiwirrkurra people at this time: Kate was their IPA Coordinator, and Rachel was a consultant ecologist who came out regularly to work with the Rangers and traditional owners.Later that year, an exciting collaboration began with Alan Yen, whose speciality was edible grubs and insects, and Boyd Wright, who has the dual skills of Aboriginal language speaking and botany. Many fun and productive days were spent with the ladies showing Alan and Boyd all the different plants that maku (witchetty grubs) can be found in. A small booklet from this work was produced, called 'Yara makutjarra palya' (story about edible grubs). From here, the idea for a larger bush foods book took root and was expanded to include all plant-related bush foods (seeds, roots, fruits, honeys and gums), as well as fungi and insect foods such as grubs, galls and scale insects. The book title 'Mirrka Palya', literally means 'good foods', and is intended as a record for future Indigenous and non-Indigenous generations of the plants and edible insects that the ladies ate when they were living traditional (pre-European contact) lives in the bush.In addition to providing an ethnobotanical resource, Mirrka Palya is intended to provide a record of the various languages spoken by the people of Kiwirrkurra. With the help of linguist Ken Hansen and Kiwirrkurra community members such as John Tjupurrula, Ray Tjangala James, and the ladies themselves, plant descriptions and short life stories of each of the Aboriginal authors were recorded, transcribed in language and then translated into English. These language stories are presented in Mirrka Palya as a means of preserving the linguistic diversity of Kiwirrkurra. This is important, as some of the languages spoken at Kiwirrkurra are only spoken by a small handful of very old people and are in imminent danger of becoming extinct.
