A study commissioned by the National Estate Committee acting through the Victorian Ministry of Conservation in response to submissions made by the cities of Northcote, Collingwood and Richmond in 1973. This copy of the report is poorly documented - it is not clear whether the `Yarra bank improvement study' is an alternative title for the present work, or the name of a greater study under which this one is subsumed. No date is given, but 1971 census data is used. The report aims to provide general background information for those concerned about the improvement of the Yarra and environs. The study focus is that portion of the river from the Chandler Highway in Alphington to the Punt Road bridge in South Richmond. Recommendations made in the light of the decline of industry in the inner suburbs aim at transforming the industrial west bank for public recreational use. This would require the acquisition of significant industrial sites. The history of European use of the river is outlined in about a dozen pages.
