This volume considers the linguistic borders between languages and dialects, as well as the administrative, cultural and mental borders that reflect or affect linguistic ones; it comprises eight articles examining the mental borders between dialects, dialect continua and areas of mixed dialect, language ideologies, language mixing and contact-induced language change. The book opens with Dennis R. Preston’s review article on perceptual dialectology, showing how this field of study provides insights on laymen’s perceptions about dialect boundaries, and how such perceptions explain regional and social variation. Johanna Laakso problematizes the common notion of languages as having clear-cut boundaries and stresses the artificialness and conventionality of linguistic borders. Vesa Koivisto introduces the Border Karelian dialects as an example of language and dialect mixing. "Barents Russia" is the far northwestern corner of the Russian Federation, bordering on the Barents Sea and the affluent Nordic countries. It is a region full of natural resources - petroleum, fish, minerals, etc - much of which is yet to be exploited. The region is heavily influenced by the Cold War and 70 years of Soviet central planning, with heavy industry concentrated in "company-towns", and with a strong military presence. The region also houses some serious threats to a vulnerable Arctic environment. The ten past years have brought historic changes in Barents Russia and in the relations between this region and the world around it. Yet, the next couple of decades may bring even more profound changes, the direction of which is hard to predict. Much hangs in the balance, ranging from the supply of oil and gas to the world market to broader political issues such as the future for democracy and the rule of law, the protection of the environment, the integration into world trade and the old favourite topic of the high north - the strategic balance. This volume is the first book length study into the essive, a relatively unknown case marker like English ‘as (a child)’. It focuses on the distribution of the essive in contemporary Uralic languages with special attention to the opposition between permanent and impermanent state. The volume presents large sets of new data and insights into the use of the essive in nineteen Uralic languages on the basis of a typological linguistic questionnaire. The typological variation is discussed within the linguistic domains of non-verbal main predication, secondary predication, complementation, and manner, temporal, and circumstantial adverbial phrases.
