Excerpt from Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture, 1898 In addition also to the usual statistical matter, including the crop statistics and prices of farm products and the imports and exports of agricultural products and transportation rates, and in view of the natural eagerness of the people for information regarding the new dependencies, figures are given showing the foreign trade of Cuba and of the Philippine Islands. Similar figures are not given for Puerto Rico and Hawaii owing to the fact that in the main body of the book are to be found special articles upon these islands. Attention is also called to the review of the weather for the past year, prepared by an expert of the Weather Bureau, and which pre sents a detailed weather record in comparatively simple form. This review is continued from year to year, and promises to grow constantly in interest and usefulness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture, 1897 It is my earnest wish that the Yearbook shall be of such a popular character and of such value to practical agriculture as to justify the enormous edition issued by Congress. Every one contributing to it should be fully impressed with the fact that every page contained in the Yearbook costs the country $500, and is designed to be distributed to half a million persons. As the reputation of the Department is assuredly a matter of pride to every one of its officers and scientific workers, I feel confident of the hearty cooperation of each one of you in making this book the best book of its kind ever issued. As soon as the subjects upon which you propose to submit papers are presented to me for consideration, I shall indicate which of them will be acceptable, that the work of preparation may be undertaken as promptly as possible. The editing of the Yearbook for 1897 will be confided, as in the case of the other publications of the Department, to the Chief of the Division of Publications, under the personal direction of the Secretary. Excerpt from Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture In presenting the Yearbook of the Department of Agriculture for 1896 to farmers and others interested in the subject of agriculture, it is hoped that it may, in a measure at least, fulfill whatever expecta tions have been aroused by the two preceding volumes. When the Annual Report of the United States Department of Agriculture first appeared in this form, the hepe was expressed that future numbers of the book would still more fully justify the new departure. It is therefore hoped that no backward step is evidenced in the present volume and that the work may indicate a steady growth toward the ideal which has been continually in mind, but which is as yet so far short of attainment. Excerpt from Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture, 1899 I have the honor to report upon the work of the Department of Agriculture for the year ending June 30, 1899. This report touches upon the work regularly carried on by the several Bureaus, Divisions, and Offices, and also indicates the new'lines of scientific inquiry inaugurated by the Department for the benefit of producers in the several States. A brief summary precedes more extended considera tion. I have also endeavored to give in sufficient detail the reasons for the estimates presented to Congress to carry on the work for the coming year. Excerpt from Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture, 1903 The tendency of the Yearbook to increase in size, following very naturally the growth of the Department whose work it deals with, led to the production for several years of a book of inconvenient dimeh sions, and threatened, unless a different system were pursued in its preparation, very soon to make a most unwieldy volume. An earnest effort had to be made, and a change was therefore inaugurated in the preparation of the present volume, with a view to reducing its bulk. The result has been to reduce it by about 5200 pages; while the tendency to conservatism in the matter of illustrations, which for the past year or two has characterized all the publication work of the Department, has caused a reduction in the number of plates from 87 in the Year book for 1902 to 65 in the present volume. It has been impossible, of course, to effect such a marked reduction without in some measure restricting the number of articles contributed. The number in this volume, while still considerably above the average since the Yearbook was established, is 32, as against 37 last year and 33 in the Yearbook for 1901. The authors are, however, to be con gratulated upon having more nearly than ever before approached the standard of brevity which it has been sought to establish in connection with Yearbook articles, and the average length is but a fraction over 12 pages. Readers who have been in the habit of consulting the Appendix will find there also evidence of this restrictive policy in the elimination of some features to which they have become accustomed. It is believed, however, that the most important information presented in this part of the Yearbook for permanent preservation has been retained. At a risk of repetition, it must be again stated for the information of those who desire to possess a copy of the work, that the quota assigned to the Department's use is barely su cient to supply its own active coworkers, and the great majority of people desiring to secure a copy must, therefore, depend upon their Senators, Representatives. Excerpt from Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture, 1918 The efforts put forth by the farmers and the agricultural organizations to secure increased production can perhaps best be concretely indicated in terms of planting operations. The size of the harvest may not be the measure of the labors of the farmers. Adverse weather conditions and unusual ravages of insects or plant diseases may partly overcome and neutralize the most exceptional exertions.
