I’ve imagined this in my head so many times. I’ve always thought about what I would say; what I would do, and how it would all turn out to be. And every time I would remove some detail . . . In the tradition of Michener, The Love Remains chronicles the dramatic events of 19th century Maui, through the life of Kale Davis, the last Hawaiian Chiefess to rule the land now known as Kapalua Resort. 'He waiwai 'oukou i ka'u 'ike.so precious are our ancestors in my eyes. I was transported to the times of my kupuna, as if it were a 'movie in my mind'. This is a historical novel that won't disappoint. -Aloha Keko'olani, M.A., Instructor, Hawaiian-Pacific Island Studies, Honolulu Community College 'With consummate skill, Katherine Smith creates far more than a mere romance. Through interaction of her main protagonists, she documents the rich cultural, ethnic, and linguistic history of Hawai'i's Old Kingdom during a period of irrevocable expansion. -Randolph Klawiter, PhD., Professor Emeritus, Notre Dame University In 1817, 20-yr-old Kale Davis flees a broken marriage, hoping Honokahua, Maui will be her refuge and a place of belonging. Instead, this poor fishing and farming village awarded to Kale's late father by Kamehameha the Great, makes far greater demands-and offers much sweeter rewards-than the young chiefess could even imagine. Torn between her Hawaiian and Caucasian roots, uncertain about her own abilities and unprepared for leadership, Kale can offer only her keen intelligence, a deep love for the land and her solemn oath to rule her people righteously. With steadfast determination and help from her five husbands, Kale leads Honokahua through drought, famine, epidemics and a time of frenetic change that threatens to sweep away a millennia-old culture, transforming Hawai'i from Old Kingdom to Industrial Age in just five decades. Even as Honokahua and herpeople thrive, Kale suffers sacrifice, violence and heartbreak before finding spiritual completeness and enduring love.

The second year of graduate school started out as a new beginning. I felt stronger. My heart had stitched itself up. I had finally healed enough on the inside to let love flourish once again. But an ever-present ex-boyfriend made the unresolved emotions between us impossible to ignore. Then new complications emerged: Said ex-boyfriend began dating Cecilia, who just happened to be the ex-girlfriend of my new love interest. I should have hated her. I wanted to hate her. But, I have to admit, I liked her. As the semester progressed, the tangled web between us deepened in ways I never could have anticipated, and it spread to those closest to us. We had the same classes, the same friends, the same interests. Then, of course, there were all the secrets, some of which could ruin the love I believed I wanted, I deserved. Once again, I got pulled into the dizzying vortex of all that remained unfinished. And doubt crept in. Had I really healed enough to make myself vulnerable again? Had I made the right choices? But the big question is: Can we ever really leave past relationships behind? This is the second book in the Where You'll Land series, but can be read as a stand-alone.

The Song Remains The Same written by Andrew Ford and has been published by La Trobe University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-02 with Music categories.

An illuminating history of the song for every kind of music lover Often today, the word ‘song’ is used to describe all music. A free-jazz improvisation, a Hindustani raga, a movement from a Beethoven symphony: apparently, they’re all songs. But they’re not. From Sia to Springsteen, Archie Roach to Amy Winehouse, a song is a specific musical form. It’s not so much that they all have verses and choruses – though most of them do – but that they are all relatively short and self-contained; they have beginnings, middles and ends; they often have a single point of view, message or story; and, crucially, they unite words and music. Thus, a Schubert song has more in common with a track by Joni Mitchell or Rihanna than with one of Schubert’s own symphonies. The Song Remains the Same traces these connections through seventy-five songs from different cultures and times: love songs, anthems, protest songs, lullabies, folk songs, jazz standards, lieder and pop hits; ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ to ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Jerusalem’ to ‘Jolene’. Unpicking their inner workings makes familiar songs strange again, explaining and restoring the wonder, joy (or possibly loathing) the reader experienced on first hearing. ‘As much about singing, musicianship and recording as it is about songwriting, this eclectic ride through a unique choice of songs (everyone will argue for alternatives) is cleverly curated and littered with intriguing details about the creators and their times, filled with loving cross-references to other songs and deft musical analysis. I defy anyone not to leap online to listen to the unfamiliar, or re-listen to old favourites in light of new detail. One of the best games in this book is figuring out why one song follows the other: there’s always an intelligent, often very funny, link.’ —Robyn Archer
