Dunia Revolusi meneroka periode revolusi Indonesia (1945–1949) dari perspektif regional. Mempertemukan dua tradisi historiografi nasional yang telah lama terpisah, Dunia Revolusi merupakan hasil kerja sama antara peneliti Indonesia melalui proyek penelitian Proklamasi Kemerdekaan, Revolusi dan Perang di Indonesia, 1945–1949 yang diselenggarakan oleh Departemen Sejarah, Universitas Gadjah Mada dan Peneliti Belanda yang tergabung dalam Program Studi Regional (Regional Studies Project) yang dikelola KITLV (Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal, -Land en Volkenkunde), di bawah payung proyek penelitian Kemerdekaan, Dekolonisasi, Kekerasan dan Perang di Indonesia, 1945-1950 (Independence, Decolonization, Violence and War in Indonesia, 1945–1950).

Dinamika NKRI, hingga saat ini, terus mengalami ujian ancaman disintegrasi bangsa. Hal tersebut memberi motif model pengelolaan hubungan antara pemerintah pusat dengan pemerintahan daerah untuk menjaga keseimbangan dalam NKRI. Idealnya, dalam konsepsi negara kesatuan, seluruh pengelolaan pemerintahan daerah berbasis pada satu model struktur organisasi beserta fungsi, tugas, dan wewenang yang dimiliki. Akan tetapi, praktiknya, dalam konteks NKRI, menurut UUD 1945, membuka ruang-ruang tertentu yang memungkinkan pengelolaan pemerintahan daerah antara satu daerah dengan daerah yang lainnya dapat berbeda-beda. Persoalan ini sangat menarik. Dalam penyelenggaraan pemerintahan daerah di Indonesia, pola hubungan kewenangan pemerintah pusat dan daerah di DI Yogyakarta, khususnya, merupakan pola hubungan kewenangan yang berdasarkan sistem rumah tangga materiil karena sudah ditentukan secara tegas dalam undang-undang keistimewaan yaitu meliputi tata cara pengisian jabatan gubernur dan wakil gubernur, kelembagaan pemerintahan daerah, pertanahan, kebudayaan, dan tata ruang. Sedangkan, UU Nomor 32 Tahun 2004 yang juga digunakan dalam penyelenggaraan pemerintahan daerah, menerapkan sistem rumah tangga riil. Sementara itu, Yogyakarta memiliki kondisi yang memungkinkan diterapkannya desentralisasi asimetris dalam penyelenggaraan pemerintahan daerahnya karena, baik secara konseptual maupun kontekstual, pola hubungan kewenangan pemerintah pusat dan daerah di DIY berbeda dengan daerah lain. Hal ini merupakan sebuah peneguhan teori desentralisasi asimetris yang berlaku di DIY.

Based on close reading of historical documents--poetry as much as statistics--and focused on the conceptualization of technology, this book is an unconventional evocation of late colonial Netherlands East Indies (today Indonesia). In considering technology and the ways that people use and think about things, Rudolf Mrázek invents an original way to talk about freedom, colonialism, nationalism, literature, revolution, and human nature. The central chapters comprise vignettes and take up, in turn, transportation (from shoes to road-building to motorcycle clubs), architecture (from prison construction to home air-conditioning), optical technologies (from photography to fingerprinting), clothing and fashion, and the introduction of radio and radio stations. The text clusters around a group of fascinating recurring characters representing colonialism, nationalism, and the awkward, inevitable presence of the European cultural, intellectual, and political avant-garde: Tillema, the pharmacist-author of Kromoblanda; the explorer/engineer IJzerman; the "Javanese princess" Kartina; the Indonesia nationalist journalist Mas Marco; the Dutch novelist Couperus; the Indonesian novelist Pramoedya Ananta Toer; and Dutch left-wing liberal Wim Wertheim and his wife. In colonial Indies, as elsewhere, people employed what Proust called "remembering" and what Heidegger called "thinging" to sense and make sense of the world. In using this observation to approach Indonesian society, Mrázek captures that society off balance, allowing us to see it in unfamiliar positions. The result is a singular work with surprises for readers throughout the social sciences, not least those interested in Southeast Asia or colonialism more broadly.

The notion of 'history' has always been one strenuously debated by both academics and the wider population. This deeply provocative re-thinking of our engagement with the past by one of the world's leading post-modern historians takes that debate one step further. Alun Munslow re-assesses history in the light of post-modernism and other intellectual challenges which have questioned the primacy of the modernist epistemology of empiricism. In an original and stimulating vision of history that will intrigue all those seriously interested in the subject, Munslow argues that history is not only about the sources, but a literary construction. Munslow concludes that history, as a cultural narrative about the past can never tell us what the past really means. This far reaching conclusion is based on the radical idea that the content of history is defined as much by the nature of the language used to represent and interpret that content as it is by research into the sources.
