The astonishing scenery of Yosemite National Park is known throughout the world, primarily for the soaring granite outcroppings and graceful waterfalls around Yosemite Valley. But this park is much larger than just the valley. Relatively few visitors get to experience Yosemite's vast expanses, whether south to Wawona and Fish Camp or east to White Wolf and Tuolumne Meadows. Indeed, it was John Muir's efforts to protect the meadows and hills around the valley that ultimately led to the establishment of Yosemite National Park in 1890. The state park, which had been established in 1863 and consisted of Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees, was added to the federal park in 1913.

This collection of essays and photographs, originally published as a special issue of California History, the journal of the California Historical Society, documents the creation and management of California's first three national parks, focusing on the debate over preservation versus development. As the authors of these essays remind us, tourists visited Yosemite long before its establishment as a national park; and the issues of park development so hotly debated today were raised and debated first in Yosemite, nearly a hundred years ago.

The Yosemite written by John Muir and has been published by Courier Dover Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-12 with Nature categories.

John Muir (1838–1914) ranks among America's most important and influential naturalists, and he is closely associated with Yosemite National Park. He wrote magazine articles that encouraged its foundation, assisted in drawing its boundaries, and co-founded the Sierra Club to ensure its protection. Muir explored virtually every inch of Yosemite, which he called "nature's landscape garden, at once beautiful and sublime," and made detailed studies of its geology, plants, and animals. This volume of classic nature writing reflects the extent of the beloved conservationist's intimate connection with the region and his appreciation of its majestic landscapes. Muir's lyrical celebrations of natural wonders range far afield, from rivers, lakes, and waterfalls to serene forests and meadows, rugged canyons, and snowy mountain peaks. An essential companion for park visitors, The Yosemite exudes an almost mystical love for natural beauty and the spiritual power of wilderness areas.

How should a national park be managed? Among all of the debates affecting America’s national parks, none has proved more enduring. Nor has any park, Alfred Runte reminds us, been in the spotlight more than Yosemite. Its cast of characters is especially rich, including James Mason Hutchings, Galen Clark, Frederick Law Olmsted, John Muir, David Brower, Joseph Grinnell, George M. Wright, and Ansel Adams. Not only was Yosemite the centerpiece of their careers, it was also the wellspring of their passion for nature. Now fully revised and updated, Yosemite: The Embattled Wilderness continues their story, from Yosemite’s path-breaking establishment in 1864 as a grant to California, 1890 expansion into a national park, boundary reductions and loss of the Hetch Hetchy Valley, evolution of wildlife protections and science, management practices threatening Yosemite Valley, and the fight for wilderness to the present day.

A mere utterance of the word aYosemitea conjures up images of Half Dome, El Capitan, giant sequoias, and the unmatched beauty this northern California park has to offer. However, the area known today as Yosemite has not always been a place of tranquility. Once the home of Ahwahnee tribe, these Native Americans were forced to surrender their home to armed miners rushing for gold and a California government clutching the philosophy of Manifest Destiny.

In 1846, Thomas Larkin, American council general to the Mexican government in California, purchased a Mexican land grant, Las Mariposas, for Col. John C. Fremont. The grant consisted of 10 square leagues of grazing land located near the Merced River and west of the Sierra. In 1848, when California became the possession of the United States, the treaty called for the recognition of preexisting grants. Gold was discovered in the foothills of the Sierra that same year. Fremont floated his questionable Mexican grant into the gold discovery region. With the formation of the State of California in 1850, one of the original counties was named Mariposa, Spanish for "butterflies." Located within the county was the Fremont grant and much of the yet undiscovered Yosemite region of the Sierra. Encounters with Native Americans near the mining camps lead to the formation of the Mariposa Battalion, and a search for the natives led to the American discovery of Yosemite Valley. Thus, it was custodians and photographers such as Charles Leander Weed, Carlton E Watkins, J.J. Riley, George Fiske, Ansel Adams, and many others that interpreted and introduced Yosemite to the world.
