Forward Dear Paul M y friend Paul LeBlanc and I have had many wonderful adventures together over the years. I knew we were going to be friends when we first met on a film called Silence of the North in 1981. We were shooting in northern Canada in40 degree temperatures. I had a scene where I had to run out of my cabin because a bear was on the roof, and shoot the bear. Paul and I were inside the cabin, just the two of us, waiting for my cue. When the bear went on the roof, the rafters of the cabin started sagging and the snow came pouring in. It looked like the roof was going to give way and the bear fall through and join us in the small cabin. We were terrified. At which point, Paul wailed, Oh, please, I just wanted to be a hairdresser! I laughed so hard I dropped my rifle. And what a hairdresser he is. Hes always been my favorite, not just for his amazing artistry, which he demonstrated on me over and over again in many films, but most particularly in Requiem for a Dream in 2000. Hes done my hair not only for films, but also for the Oscars, the Tonys, in Paris, in London, in limousines, in all temperatures and under every imaginable condition. But weve always had a great time together and hes always made me laugh, as Im sure readers of his book will. Ellen Burstyn (2006)

I'd always wanted to travel, except that I didn't know it. After graduating from college, getting a job, and setting out on my own, I made some sporadic attempts to see some of the world. It took a while to figure out how and it was only after I got married that the two of us came upon a strategy that worked for us. This book is a collection of stories about my mostly modest opportunities to travel. This is not a how-to book. There will be no listings of the best places to go. You will not find even a slightly comprehensive guide to locations, National Parks, interesting cities, countries, or anything else particularly useful. However, I hope you will find some interesting and amusing stories about surprises that we encountered along the way.

You have picked up this book because you are a poetry reader. Or you are about to be one. Because as soon as you read a poem, that's what you are. Filled with the profound, the lyrical, the consoling, and the curious, The Poetry Reader: An Anthology is the book you would hope to find if you washed up alone on a deserted island: this companionable collection shows how poetry itself is a discussion, alive and flowing, and how poems speak to, with, and sometimes over one another. If you are a teacher, this is the anthology you wish you had as a student – a text that doesn't try to survey entire time periods or aesthetic areas, but one that places side-by-side carefully selected poems that speak to each other over time as well as to today's readers. - Section header notes provide critical commentary, framing the poems within their given topic - Discussion and writing suggestions give interesting and actionable prompts - Works as a standalone book, or can easily be used alongside Poetry: A Survivor's Guide, 2nd ed. Drawing on traditional poems and contemporary works, this anthology offers globe-spanning, stylistically diverse poetry, ranging from canonical poems by the likes of Sappho and Shakespeare to those of new voices such as Layli Long Soldier and Mukoma wa Ngugi. As a compact, eclectic, and approachable collection based on specific aspects of poetry and poetic practices – from identity and metaphor to sublimation and spirituality – The Poetry Reader acts as a guide to understanding the essentials of both reading and writing poetry.

Nancy was born and raised in Harbor Cove, a small fish-buying station. Isolation and hardships were part of her everyday existence. From the time she is old enough to stand on wheel watch, she works with her dad on his old wooden tugboat. They tow log rafts for logging companies and hire out as beach loggers to recover logs from rafts that break apart during the storms that are normal occurrence in the Alaskan Panhandle. As soon as she is old enough to be on her own, she leaves home and never looks back. She is determined to live with all the conveniences she grew up without. That is exactly what she does: a husband, two kids, and a house in the suburbs in Lynnwood, Washington. Then the phone rings. Her dad needs help after having a stroke. Still resistant, she is convinced by her husband and daughter to return. She takes her fourteen-year-old son because he is having a hard time socially at school. Her children know nothing of how she grew up. She has told them very little because she is afraid they will become fascinated with the very things she detested. When she arrives, she finds hardly anything has changed. Folks are still living the way they were when she left, making up the rules as they go along. Then somehow she begins to question her memory and begins to realize the importance of allowing people to live the way they choose. Reluctantly she agrees to help her dad recover some logs from a broken raft, putting lives in danger, including her own son's. Neil arrives in the The Cove two months before his job begins as a school teacher, a job nobody else wanted. He's not even sure there will be enough children to have school open. When someone asks why he can't come up with answer. Ralph Bodeen arrives one morning in a small plastic punt after rowing all night. His small troller has burned to the waterline. He announces that he is now a man without resources and is looking for work. He has lost everything including all of his toilet paper. The Cove collects people and it's up to them to somehow make things work -- or not.
