A scandalous exploration of elite undergraduate life from the author of The Bonfire of the Vanities Dupont University: the Olympian halls of learning housing the cream of America's youth, the roseate Gothic spires and manicured lawns suffused with tradition... or so it appears to beautiful, brilliant Charlotte Simmons, a sheltered freshman from Sparta, North Carolina, who has come here on a full scholarship. But Charlotte soon learns that for the upper-crust coeds of Dupont, sex, status, and kegs trump academic achievement every time. As Charlotte encounters Dupont's elite, she gains a new, revelatory sense of her own power, that of her difference and of her very innocence. But little does she realise that she will act as a catalyst in all of their lives. ‘A firecracker of a novel... A pyrotechnic delight just as dazzling as The Bonfire of the Vanities’ - Sunday Express

The book will be cross referenced by sports categories and teams, so the reader will have an easy time finding attractions in a particular state by location or team. Included here are everything from restaurants owned by sports celebrities (i.e. Elway’s in Denver or Yao Ming’s YAO Bar & Restaurant in Houston) to such newly minted sites as the National Soccer Hall of Fame Museum at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The latest trend--celebrity cruises with your favorite team—are also detailed, as are both birth places and grave sites of the stars, and such obscure museums as the Ted Williams Hitters’ Hall of Fame in St. Petersburg, Florida. Conferences and a calendar of other fan events round out this essential guide to all things sports.

For the last quarter century, Dan Jenkins has been fixing his cold-eyed stare and wisecracking style on the real-life Billy Clyde and Kenny Lee Pucketts of the sports world. You Call It Sports, But I Say It’s a Jungle Out There is a collection of his best work from Sports Illustrated, Playboy, Golf Digest, and his nationally syndicated column, and includes a stack of new pieces written especially for this book. Jenkins spares no one in his search for the culprits who have taken the fun out of sports: NFL owners and refs, PGA Tour administrators, basketball players who can’t read, tennis players who can’t speak English (or say anything worth hearing when they do). He also finds things worth celebrating: the electric charge given off by Arnold Palmer at his best, the excitement of a truly great college football game, or a real heavyweight champion, like Joe Louis. Overflowing with good ol’ boys, great one-liners, famous sporting events, and barroom tales, this is the best of Dan Jenkins—which is to say, it’s as good as sportswriting gets anywhere.

Why We Root: Mad Obsessions of a Chicago Sports Fan is a collection of Jack M Silverstein's sportswriting, including pieces from 1999 to 2023 that reveal the sports-fan mindset and show readers why we root for our teams. This collection of eighty-one articles is organized based on a fan's emotional journey—from learning the game, to knowing the game, to emotional heartbreak, and eventually to celebrating championships. Included in the book are Silverstein's real-time articles on many of the best known Chicago sports events of the early 21st century, including: the White Sox, Blackhawks, and Cubs breaking winning their first championships after massive droughts; the Bears reaching, and losing, the Super Bowl; the rise and fall of saviors-to-be Derrick Rose and Jay Cutler; the Chicago Sky winning the 2021 WNBA championship; the Blackhawks' famed "17 seconds" championship; the Bears' agonizing "double doink"; and the Cubs' horrific Bartman game, retold from multiple perspectives in multiple years, including ten years later by pitcher Mark Prior and catcher Paul Bako. Also included are Silverstein's look back at the Bulls-Pistons rivalry of the 1990s, the 1995 Northwestern Wildcats Rose Bowl team, and Michael Jordan's flu game.

Elder Darrow, Beantown’s favorite bar owner and amateur sleuth, returns in “an immersive and satisfying addition to the category of Boston crime fiction” (Kirkus Reviews). When a burial detail to the paupers’ grave on Boston’s Rinker Island comes up with one extra coffin, homicide detective Dan Burton is called in to take the case. The murdered man is a neighborhood activist against the effort of rich and powerful interests to bring the Olympic Games to Boston. At the same time, Donald Maldonado, cousin of the infamous Icky Ricky Maldonado, tries to create a place for himself in the Boston underworld, taking over his cousin’s criminal activities. He jostles with one of Burton’s childhood friends for a piece of the illegitimate prospects of the Games coming to town: construction contracts, union connections, and so on. Complicating matters is that Esposito owner Elder Darrow’s thieving girlfriend has stolen something of Maldonado’s and he wants it back. Badly enough to kill anyone in the way. Real estate speculators offer to buy the Esposito and turn the block into a velodrome for the proposed Games. Elder is tempted, unsure that he wants to continue in the bar business. The confusion turns the world around Mercy Street into an uproar. Praise for Richard Cass and the Elder Darrow Mysteries “Richard Cass writes the kind of mysteries I first fell in love with—clever, twisty, and brimming with characters as colorful as they are well-drawn.”—Chris Holm, Anthony Award-winning author of Michael Hendricks Novels “Cass’s version of noir Boston is dark and beautiful as a back alley after a morning rain.”—Gerry Boyle, author of the Jack McMorrow Mysteries

Introducing Sociology Using The Stuff Of Everyday Life written by Josee Johnston and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-06 with Social Science categories.

The challenges of teaching a successful introductory sociology course today demand materials from a publisher very different from the norm. Texts that are organized the way the discipline structures itself intellectually no longer connect with the majority of student learners. This is not an issue of pandering to students or otherwise seeking the lowest common denominator. On the contrary, it is a question of again making the practice of sociological thinking meaningful, rigorous, and relevant to today’s world of undergraduates. This comparatively concise, highly visual, and affordable book offers a refreshingly new way forward to reach students, using one of the most powerful tools in a sociologist’s teaching arsenal—the familiar stuff in students’ everyday lives throughout the world: the jeans they wear to class, the coffee they drink each morning, or the phones their professors tell them to put away during lectures. A focus on consumer culture, seeing the strange in the familiar, is not only interesting for students; it is also (the authors suggest) pedagogically superior to more traditional approaches. By engaging students through their stuff, this book moves beyond teaching about sociology to helping instructors teach the practice of sociological thinking. It moves beyond describing what sociology is, so that students can practice what sociological thinking can do. This pedagogy also posits a relationship between teacher and learner that is bi-directional. Many students feel a sense of authority in various areas of consumer culture, and they often enjoy sharing their knowledge with fellow students and with their instructor. Opening up the sociology classroom to discussion of these topics validates students’ expertise on their own life-worlds. Teachers, in turn, gain insight from the goods, services, and cultural expectations that shape students’ lives. While innovative, the book has been carefully crafted to make it as useful and flexible as possible for instructors aiming to build core sociological foundations in a single semester. A map on pages ii–iii identifies core sociological concepts covered so that a traditional syllabus as well as individual lectures can easily be maintained. Theory, method, and active learning exercises in every chapter constantly encourage the sociological imagination as well as the "doing" of sociology.
