When a compassionate judge gives an angry and troubled young man the choice between going to a mysterious horse ranch in the western Rockies or going to jail, the choice seems obvious. But when he arrives with his parents at an old hunting lodge on Lake Sandoza, they soon realize this isn't like any place they've been before. Torn apart by frustration and bitterness after years of trying to control their wayward son, the parents are at their wits' end. Under the guidance of their patient and intriguing hosts, the family must open their hearts, challenge their beliefs and push themselves to change in ways they never thought they could. Set against a backdrop of vast and stunning landscapes, The Other Side of Here shows us that even when we are in our deepest despair, sometimes the kindness of complete strangers can be our salvation.

This volume brings together two authors, one a psychiatrist, one a philosopher, to listen to one another’s reading of five stories of what it’s like to bear a different mental or physical illness. The beginning story, or anchor, for the conversation that unfolds between them is that of a person subject to recurring spells of catatonia, the uncanniest of human conditions. They discover that truly understanding what an illness is calls for understanding it within the context of who suffers it, that to understand illness is to establish the right relation between what is being suffered and who is suffering it. This deceptively simple way of talking, which is labelled who/what talk, will prove more practical and more clarifying than will terms like “mental” and “physical.” Furthermore, it has this additional dividend: it intrinsically resists a temptation toward medical prejudice—the inclination for doctors and other caregivers to lose the who of the sufferer through their focus on the what of her illness.

The Other Side of the World: Vision and Reality embraces and celebrates the experiences of idealistic, young Peace Corps volunteers as they confronted the ancient and enigmatic civilization of India four decades ago. Prompted by memories and emotions tapped during a gathering on the 40-year reunion of their return to the States, members of India 44 A&B provide reflections that are honest, compelling, insightful, riotous, humbling, and yet redemptive. These reflections give expression to feelings long repressed and, at the same time, uncover the mysterious ways in which their service in remote India transformed and redirected the trajectory of their lives. Their stories provide a humorous and deeply moving description of village life, where imperfect language skills and limited technical capabilities interacted with good intentions and stubborn dedication to produce embarrassment on the one hand, and the occasional minor miracle on the other. This is not a feel-good testimony to the Peace Corps on its golden anniversary. Rather, it is a sobering depiction of the lives of volunteers living in one of the Peace Corps' most demanding site countries, where frustrations and challenges were found in abundance. Yet at the end of the day, these stories generally attest to the wisdom of the Peace Corps concept, which affirms the powers of volunteerism and the giving of self. For many, it was the first time these volunteers had articulated their feelings since leaving India. Mary Jo Clark, Thomas Corbett, Michael Simonds and Haywood Turrentine compiled the book. Respectively, the authors reside in San Diego, California, Madison, Wisconsin, the greater Hartford area, and Birmingham, Alabama. http: //sbpra.com/HaywoodTurrentine

Once upon a time, Psychics and Healers were revered. They held positions of status and authority. They were the closest confidants to Kings, Emperors and mighty rulers. Over the centuries, the Western world changed. Psychics and Healers moved underground, as though their work had become taboo. To admit consulting with one was akin to a belief in faeries, witchcraft or even aliens. Today, there are different classes of Seer. Some charge $5 a minute, giving readings of a dubious nature over the phone. The real Psychic Healer operates by word of mouth. Often they are booked weeks and months in advance. They consult to the most powerful and wealthy. They are privy to information that would boggle the mundane mind. They hold court between what is seen, and what only they can see. They are the holders of truth, reveling in the mysteries of life and ancient wisdom. Alex Telman is a real Psychic Healer. These are my conversations with him. The Healer is the must-read book of 2016. A storyteller and an internationally renowned psychic healer weave their own personal experiences and discuss all the taboo topics relevant to the modern life. The concepts leap from the page and into your mind, planting seeds of suggestion, invitation, and encouragement Readers have described The Healer as a life-changing map that they have been unable to put down. The Healer not only inspires a new set of eyes for life but also demystifies a number of murky words and concepts along the way. Think. Differently.

She never found love in life…Is it possible she’ll find love after death? Something unexpected happens to Cindy Thomas during a mystery weekend at the Ferris Mansion. One second she’s enjoying a performance with astonishing special effects. The next, she’s dead, surrounded by a troupe of long dead actors who aren’t special effects at all. Harvey, her dream guy, is no longer a dream. He’s real—a real ghost. Suddenly, this new existence is complicated and scary and amazing, leaving her wondering if she’s made the worst mistake of her life, her death, or whatever you want to call it. Cindy will have to decide…should she step through the gateway to Heaven, or is Heaven actually here on earth, in this handsome ghost’s arms? Author’s Note: When I wrote DYING AT HONEYMOON INN, I became fond of Cindy Thomas, the young woman I killed off before readers had a chance to get to know her. For those of you familiar with my other books, you know that in VACATIONING WITH THE DEAD, I populated the Ferris Mansion with a troupe of actors who just happen to be ghosts. I enjoyed writing that book so much, I wanted to revisit the characters. What better way than to have Cindy’s spirit encounter them upon her death? Adding her to the group presented a number of problems, but I really enjoyed writing Cindy and Harvey’s love story. Who’s to say love ends with death, or even the possibility of new love? That’s part of the joy of creation. In my world, it doesn’t have to.

Cody Hunter patrolled the Mexico border by horseback in southern Arizona’s expansive desert. He was ambushed and flown to a dangerous drug cartel near Bogota. While being held prisoner, he heard big cats caged nearby and dubbed the headquarters “The Growling Cat Ranch.” This cartel entertained its friends in high places and neighboring drug lords by feeding the cats live human beings, preferably U. S. law enforcement officers. Cody, having never piloted an airplane, escaped certain death by stealing one but crashed into the forest. He eluded his hunters and found refuge at the D.E.A. station in Bogota. The cartel kidnapped his wife in Tucson, then, she too, was destined for the jaguar cages. He rescued her singlehandedly against incredible odds. Having proven himself as a fighter and expert marksman, Cody is inducted into a secret organization that evens the playing field when justice is obstructed by power and rules that prevent convictions.

Validation equals survival. This one point summarizes what this book is about. It is an attempt to put into context the struggle that has occurred within and outside of the gay community for equality, justice and substantiation. This book will seek to paint a picture of homo-sexism through various institutions in this country that shape societal views and perceptions. I define homo-sexism as discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of the homosexual orientation- including from within the gay community. No where have I seen this term used or defined. Why not? Homo-sexism exists and I believe because it has not been defined, it will continue to exist. Have we jumped defining basic terms in light of more dramatic terms, such as hate crimes or homophobia? Homo-sexism is not the same as homophobia. Homophobia describes a fear against same-sex preferences that can lead to homo-sexism and ultimately hate crimes. There is a process. It is appropriately used to legally and culturally define the use of ones gender against the individual or group, but does not include homosexuality. It is because there is so much passion, several issues exude at once. Because of this multiple exudation, this project began out of frustration and utter invalidation. How is that for a motivation? Many friends and students have directly or indirectly encouraged me to go forward with my ideas. This book examines the struggles one gay man has in his life and uncovers the truth it holds as he combats love, disease and society.
