Excerpt from Young Boys and Boarding-School: The Functions, Organisation and Administration of the Sub-Preparatory Boarding-School for Boys I do not wish to be condemned for setting forth a plan of education which will turn out an un democratic citizen. I think democracy is, per haps, in its ideal condition, a matter of level; but I do not think that a boy or a man needs to descend to someone else's level to become demo. Cratic, and as the boy favored by fortune has the advantages in the matter of level, he should be prepared to lead such a life, as to help the establishment of the ideal democracy, by draw ing others up to his level. This means personal power, and elements of personal power are what the junior boardingschool should develop. I do not feel that this aim can be misconstrued, unless perhaps by that type of educator whom I have met with in print, one who seems to think that the private school has no right to exist at all. His notions are fixed, and argument is futile. For the present the boarding-school for young boys has a right to flourish, for it is responding more and more to an educational demand. As to its future, it all depends whether it improves or deteriorates. The man it seeks to mould, is the democratic aristocrat, one who is to become a great leader in the world, because he has learned to follow. Childhood, Identity and Masculinity: The Boarding School Boys examines the lives of ten Iranian men who were sent to boarding schools in England during the 1960s and 1970s. Their stories, situated at the intersection of Eastern and Western cultural values, signify their passage to manhood, and highlight the meaning of masculinity then and now. The reflective narratives explore issues of physical and emotional abuse received from administrators and peers, as well as the "man up" motto that pressured them to persevere in the spirit of meeting expectations and becoming a man. Narrated within the context of the traditional role of men in both Iranian and British societies, the book highlights key themes of trauma, survival and resistance, power and privilege, and their impact on the men over their lifespan. The volume offers rich insight into understanding the developmental challenges that adolescent boys face as they attempt to deal with the trauma of separation from their parents, while conforming to strict rules and regulations of boarding school education, and societal expectations of them. The volume will be of interest to scholars of developmental psychology, childhood trauma, education, cultural psychology, men’s studies, and gender. Individuals and parents interested in, and considering boarding school education will also find the narratives informative and educational.

Boarding School Syndrome written by Joy Schaverien and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-05 with Psychology categories.

Boarding School Syndrome is an analysis of the trauma of the 'privileged' child sent to boarding school at a young age. Innovative and challenging, Joy Schaverien offers a psychological analysis of the long-established British and colonial preparatory and public boarding school tradition. Richly illustrated with pictures and the narratives of adult ex-boarders in psychotherapy, the book demonstrates how some forms of enduring distress in adult life may be traced back to the early losses of home and family. Developed from clinical research and informed by attachment and child development theories ‘Boarding School Syndrome’ is a new term that offers a theoretical framework on which the psychotherapeutic treatment of ex-boarders may build. Divided into four parts, History: In the Name of Privilege; Exile and Healing; Broken Attachments: A Hidden Trauma, and The Boarding School Body, the book includes vivid case studies of ex-boarders in psychotherapy. Their accounts reveal details of the suffering endured: loss, bereavement and captivity are sometimes compounded by physical, sexual and psychological abuse. Here, Joy Schaverien shows how many boarders adopt unconscious coping strategies including dissociative amnesia resulting in a psychological split between the 'home self' and the 'boarding school self'. This pattern may continue into adult life, causing difficulties in intimate relationships, generalized depression and separation anxiety amongst other forms of psychological distress. Boarding School Syndrome demonstrates how boarding school may damage those it is meant to be a reward and discusses the wider implications of this tradition. It will be essential reading for psychoanalysts, Jungian analysts, psychotherapists, art psychotherapists, counsellors and others interested in the psychological, cultural and international legacy of this tradition including ex-boarders and their partners.

Willie Doyle is not the genius everyone thinks he is. After he fails the primary certificate in 1952 and is denied access to any secondary school in Ireland, his annoyed mother abandons him at an exclusive boarding school in Dublin and forces the priests to adopt him. Willie survives for six years, only because the academy is a bee-hive of midnight businesses managed by students. After Willie starts a lottery on predicting football results, he makes enough money to support himself. While suffering from persistent insomnia in a forty-bed dormitory, Willie explores the secret lives of the academy's priests, the unusual sleep habits and behaviors of its students, and the possibility of ghosts who purportedly wander the halls, planning to scare students. In this coming-of-age tale, a boy abandoned by his mother in a Dublin boarding school must learn to fend for himself while exploring the lives of the priests, students, and ghosts who surround him.
