The Whitlam Government had a significant impact on the lives of young people in Australia and their relationship to democracy. In addition to lowering the voting age from 21 years to 18 years, Whitlam Government reforms led to the expansion of the social, political, economic and cultural citizenship of diverse young Australians.Forty years later the need to consider and strengthen the citizenship rights and relationship of young people to Australian democracy is no less important. While many young people today are engaged with politics - even leading movements such as the Global Climate Strikes - a 2019 Report Card on Children's Rights in Australia found that Australians under the age of18 feel they have no voice in this society (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2019). In the context of significant change, complexity and uncertainty in the ecology, economy and politics of Australia and the world, understanding and promoting the participation of young people in democracy is more critical to our future than ever. This review synthesises Australian and international research published between 2009 and 2019 on young people, democracy, citizenship and participation. Considering the way globalisation shapes youthful politics and citizenship, the review first looks at the international context and then considers the literature on the Australian experience. The review has adopted a broad approach: understanding democracy as constituted through institutions and procedures as well as civic cultures and practices that breach national boundaries. Moreover, as the experience of 'youth' is different among young people, in different settings and country contexts, and transitions from 'childhood' to 'adulthood' are becoming more complex, non-linear and drawn out, the review is inclusive of published research on the political views and practices of people aged 12 - 30.

This book examines young people's political engagement in the Anglo-American democracies. It is often alleged that young people are disengaged from politics on a number of levels. The commonly held view is that young people don't vote, they do not trust politicians and have low levels of political interest. But is this true, where is it true and to what extent? Examining voter turnout, political trust, political interest, electoral and non-electoral forms of participation and Internet use, this book provides a comprehensive account of young people's political engagement in the US, Britain, Canada and Australia. In doing so this book challenges the conventional wisdom on a number of fronts by showing young people's political engagement to be much more complicated than many of the stereotypes suggest (in both good and bad ways). In this way, this book provides a report card on young people's political engagement in the twenty-first century. Young People and Politics will be of interest to students and scholars of political science, comparative politics, public policy and sociology, particularly those with a focus on young people and politics, political participation and public opinion.

Learning about politics and life as a citizen is part of the transition to adulthood. During this stage young people in most Western democracies are introduced to political processes and issues, as well as a range of political activities including voting and participation in social movements. But young people make this transition differently. The articles in this Book explore a range of ways that young people participate politically and also discuss those who are not ‘active citizens’.

This book analyses the various ways and the extent to which young people participate in politics, focusing primarily on the UK and including cross-national comparisons where relevant. It covers topics including: what is meant by political participation; youth political participation on a pan-European basis; new social media and youth political participation; whether the voting age should be lowered to 16; youth participation at the local level; and young women and political participation. Written in a lively and engaging style, the book provides a detailed investigation into the extent to which young people in the twenty-first century are interested and participate in politics. The author has included interviews with many young people, as well as with academics and specialists in the field. The book’s greatest contribution is to the debate surrounding whether or not the voting age should be lowered to 16 – a timely and thought-provoking analysis.

What is the place of young people in society today? This book presents a searching and comprehensive picture of youth, demonstrating both its diversity and singularity, and helping to dispel many of the myths, discriminations, stigmas and prejudices attached to this segment of society. Drawing on a vast empirical research exercise including over 8000 interviews and 40 focus groups in eight metropolitan areas of Brazil, this book explores the most important aspects of young people's social participation and the resulting challenges for public policy. With clear resonance beyond Brazil, this research is designed to inform youth policy strategies in the developing and developed world.

Citizen now offers a comprehensive description of the composition and behavior of young adults, an explanation and critique of the study of youth engagement, and a unique approach and methodology for appreciating how and why "citizen now" engages in politics and democracy. Citizen now considers youth political participation from the perspective of young adults themselves - specifically, young adults who've organized around an issue of great concern to Millennials, their economic well-being. The perfect text for undergraduates exploring the fundamentals of government, political behavior, and citizenship, this text's fresh take on the important subject of youth engagement offers both a path for future research and practical guidance on how to engage "citizen now" in politics and democracy.
