Having a pet in your life is indeed a blessing. We share a special bond with our pets. They become part of our family and bring light and joy to a home. Some people prefer cats, dogs, or horses. But there is a whole category of pets that people enjoy which fall under the umbrella term of "pocket pets." What is a pocket pet? Gerbils, hamsters, pet rats, sugar gliders, ferrets, rabbits, mice, other small rodents, guinea pigs, chinchillas, all fall under the umbrella of pocket pets. They are cute, they are fun, and the more social ones are the most friendly. Their individual needs vary, depending upon the kind of pocket pet you have, but they can be endearing and rewarding pets. Why do we like them and keep them as pets? Each of us has our personal reasons. However, there are some overall benefits. Pocket pets are small, so they can be kept where larger animals are not permitted. They are easy to pick up and carry around. They live indoors-no walks needed; there are none of the outdoor requirements as for dogs or horses. While they are generally easy to keep, their bedding does need to be changed and they need fresh water and food and attention and playtime. In return, they provide companionship and amusement. While they must be carefully chosen and interactions monitored for the safety of both, some "pocket pets" like ferrets, birds, and reptiles are therapeutic for children who struggle with any disability: physical, behavioral, and developmental. With the love and care they need and deserve, they can be wonderful pets. Your journal has two pages for each entry. They provide space for you to record the title or topic of each entry, what you learned from your dog and cat, and how you have used or can use what you learned.
