Ziel historischen Lernens ist es, die Entwicklung eines reflektierten und (selbst-)reflexiven Geschichtsbewusstseins zu ermöglichen. Schulbücher sind dabei nach wie vor zentral. Als Lehr-Lern-Medien sollten sie bestimmte Merkmale aufweisen, die den Erwerb und die Weiterentwicklung von Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten historischen Denkens unterstützen. Um zu klären, wie Schulbücher dies umsetzen, stellt der Band den Umgang mit schriftlichen Quellen in den Mittelpunkt. Dabei ist entgegen eines Methodenlernens fern von der Grammatik historischen Denkens mehr nötig als die alleinige Kenntnis des regelgeleiteten methodischen Umgangs mit unterschiedlichen Textquellenarten. Es soll nämlich auch deutlich werden, inwiefern Interpretationsprozesse zur Bearbeitung historischer Fragen eingesetzt werden und welche Bedeutung diese für historische Orientierung haben können. Die im Band präsentierte kategoriale Schulbuchanalyse zeigt damit auf, inwieweit approbierte österreichische Schulbücher (n=100) von der Primarstufe bis zum Ende der Sekundarstufe II im Umgang mit schriftlichen Quellen den Anforderungen eines modernen Geschichtsunterrichtes gerecht werden (können). Dabei spielt auch eine für die Ausprägung historischen Denkens förderliche fachspezifische Lernprogression in der Gestaltung von bzw. im Umgang mit schriftlichen Quellen in den Schulbüchern eine Rolle, die dazu rekonstruktiv offengelegt wird. Aus der Studie können Anregungen für Quellenarbeit im Unterricht, für die Gestaltung von Schulbüchern sowie Implikationen für die geschichtsdidaktische Forschung abgeleitet werden.

A bio-bibliography of German-speaking philologists (from East-Central Europe as well as Germany and Austria) who were forced to emigrate for reasons of race or political opposition, or went abroad simply to further their careers. Includes scholars who emigrated as minors and acquired a profession in the lands of refuge. Pp. 52-62 describe endemic antisemitism in the Wilhelmine and Weimar periods, which was especially strong at the universities and slowed the advancement of Jews. Finds no justification for the lack of solidarity of their colleagues with the Jewish faculty members dismissed under the Nazi racial laws, but notes exceptions of support for Jews. Explains the hesitation of many Jews to emigrate by the impossibility of foreseeing the Holocaust, as well as by immigration restrictions of the host countries (partly motivated by antisemitism). Discusses varying degrees of conformity and non-conformity with the policy propagated by the Reichskulturkammer not to publish articles by Jewish scholars and not to mention them by name.
