Cette thèse a pour objectif la description et l'analyse des dynamiques de production et valorisation de l'identité Zafimaniry à partir de trois domaines différents: l'art ethnique, le patrimoine immatériel et le tourisme. Les Zafimaniry sont un groupe d'un peu plus de 35.000 personnes qui habitent une région située au coeur des Hautes Terres de Madagascar. Leur vie à proximité de la forêt leur a permis de gagner une grande maîtrise dans le travail du bois, visible surtout dans l'architecture de leurs maisons et dans les gravures qu'ils utilisent pour décorer les objets usuels. Le processus de marchandisation de l'art Zafimaniry commence à partir des années '60, impulsé par les missionnaires catholiques, à qui on doit aussi les germes du tourisme moderne dans la région. Actuellement, le pays Zafimaniry attire un nombre croissant d'étrangers, à la recherche des "secrets de cette culture traditionnelle ". La transformation du savoir-faire du travail du bois des Zafimaniry dans un " art" et le développement touristique de la région sont en quelque manière légitimés et amplifiés par le classement de l'UNESCO, qui en 2008 inclut le savoir-faire du bois des Zafimaniry dans la liste des expressions du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l'humanité. La recherche repose sur un approche ethnographique qui, à partir de la description des événements qui ont lieu dans une partie de la région par rapport à la labellisation UNESCO et au développement du tourisme, identifie les discours et les pratiques des acteurs sociaux qu'y jouent un rôle et dégage les représentations et les imaginaires qui soutiennent leurs actions. L'analyse s'articule sur des plans dédoublés qui engagent la dimension locale aussi bien que celles institutionnelles, à savoir les discours des médiateurs touristiques, des organismes ministériels promoteurs de la candidature UNESCO et des marchands d'art ethnique. Par l'analyse de ces trois types de discours, on dévoile un processus d'introduction des Zafimaniry dans des "régimes de valeur ", rattachés à la marchandisation de leur art et de leur identité ethnique, mais aussi à la construction d'une image de ce groupe comme culture "traditionnelle" et" originaire".

La investigación permite conocer lugares, personas, culturas que a través de un proceso que incluye la identificación del objeto de estudio , definir el planteamiento de un problema identificado, permite justificar la importancia con los beneficios y beneficiarios, estableciendo objetivos, delimitando el tiempo y el espacio, desarrollando un marco teórico que argumenta y sustenta el qué se estudia y en dónde, aplicando un método, diseñando instrumentos para recabar la información como entrevistas, encuestas y observación entre otros, permite concluir y en ocasiones proponer alternativas de solución, para generar nuevo conocimiento en las diferentes líneas de investigación . Making the Modern Primitive provides an anthropological analysis of the encounter between local residents and tourists in the Trobriand Islands, a place renowned in anthropology and represented in various media as "culturally authentic." In such a place, how are ideas about authenticity implicated in creating and representing the self and cultural Others in the context of cultural tourism? Michelle MacCarthy addresses this question by examining four arenas of interaction between Trobriand Islanders and tourists: formal performances, informal village visits, souvenir shopping, and tourist photography. Drawing on both symbolic/interpretive approaches and concepts drawn from economic anthropology, she examines the relationship of tourism to the commoditization of culture, the ways in which local residents actively represent and enact "Trobriandness," and the ways tourists interpret and narrate their experience. MacCarthy offers an anthropological critique of concepts of authenticity, tradition, and cultural commodification, based on long-term fieldwork among Trobriand Islanders and tourists. These notions, which have particular meanings as analytical concepts in anthropology, are also used and strategically deployed in the discourses of both Trobriand Islanders and tourists. Ideas about primitivity and cultural essentialism, while critiqued by anthropologists, are nonetheless used by both parties in tourism interactions to conceptualize and contextualize difference. MacCarthy demonstrate how such tropes are employed in ways that fit with prevailing metanarratives which each side holds about the other, and how these tropes are reproduced both in individual narratives of both tourists' and Trobrianders' experiences and in their interpretations (often misconstrued) of the lives of cultural Others with whom they interact. She examines the social dimensions of cross-cultural exchange in these four arenas (performance, village life, souvenirs, photography) to argue that cultural commodities are conceived of as singularities, a special category whose commodity status is downplayed in order to generate an increased sense of authenticity and to perpetuate the myth of a "primitive" economy and way of life more generally. In touristic encounters, experience itself is a sort of commodity, but relationships (real or imagined) are central to investing these experiences with meaning and value. This analysis contributes new understandings of the role and significance of authenticity in the anthropology of tourism, and its relationship to exchange; that is, how meaning and value are ascribed to the cultural products produced and consumed in the cultural tourism encounter with reference to ideas about what is and isn't authentic.

Exploring indigenous life projects in encounters with extractivism, the present open access volume discusses how current turbulences actualise questions of indigeneity, difference and ontological dynamics in the Andes and Amazonia. While studies of extractivism in South America often focus on wider national and international politics, this contribution instead provides ethnographic explorations of indigenous politics, perspectives and worlds, revealing loss and suffering as well as creative strategies to mediate the extralocal. Seeking to avoid conceptual imperialism or the imposition of exogenous categories, the chapters are grounded in the respective authors’ long-standing field research. This is the first ethnographic study of the farmers and foragers of northeastern Zaire since Colin Turnbull's classic works of the 1960s. Roy Richard Grinker lived for nearly two years among the Lese farmers and their long-term partners, the Efe (Pygmies), learned their languages, and gained unique insights into their complex social relations and ethnic identities. By showing how political organization is structured by ethnic and gender relations in the Lese house, Grinker challenges previous views of the Lese and Efe and other farmer-forager societies, as well as the conventional anthropological boundary between domestic and political contexts.
