Mi tesis es un estudio comparativo de dos poetas, el griego Constantinos Cavafis (Alejandría, 1863-1933), y el español Jaime Gil de Biedma (Barcelona, 1929-1990). Mi investigación no aspira a buscar necesariamente influencias o imitaciones (conceptos claves para la Literatura Comparada del siglo XIX), sino más bien analogías, paralelismos, afinidades y confluencias entre estos dos autores de tradiciones literarias distintas. Mi tesis se inscribe, por tanto, en los estudios comparatistas del siglo XX, y, en concreto, en la llamada teoría del Polen de Ideas. Los aspectos de la poesía de Cavafis y Gil de Biedma que he analizado son los siguientes: a) la mirada irónica; b) el carácter dramático de su poesía (el poema como representación de la realidad); c) ironía y monólogo dramático; d) polifonía y dialogismo (la presencia de varias voces y puntos de vistas); e) el papel que desempeña la memoria (el recuerdo de la experiencia amorosa vivida en el pasado que hace que el sujeto poético reviva dicha experiencia); f) el hedonismo: el placer, fin último de la vida; g) la angustia por el paso del tiempo y la función terapéutica de la escritura; h) la relación de Cavafis y Gil de Biedma con la llamada «poesía de la experiencia»; i) el poeta y la ciudad (la ciudad vista no cómo el fondo del poema, sino como un personaje más). La conclusión final de mi estudio es que el poeta griego y el poeta español comparten el hedonismo como principio vital y estético. Y ambos poetas transforman ese hedonismo, ese sabor agridulce que deja la vida al evocar sus placeres efímeros, en arte perenne y duradero.
