डॉ. ज़ाकिर हुसैन स्मृति व्याख्यान-माला का आयोजन हर वर्ष ज़ाकिर हुसैन कॉलेज में किया जाता है और इसका उद्देश्य महान शिक्षाविद्, राष्ट्रवादी नेता और भारत के राष्ट्रपति ज़ाकिर साहब के प्रति सम्मान व्यक्त करना है। आधुनिक भारत में उच्च शिक्षा के लिए देहली कॉलेज के ऐतिहासिक अवदान और समकालीन महत्त्व को ज़ाकिर साहब बख़ूबी समझते थे। यह व्याख्यान-माला स्वतंत्रता-पूर्व और स्वातंत्रयोत्तर भारत में कॉलेज के प्रशासन में ज़ाकिर साहब द्वारा निभाई गई अहम भूमिका का अभिनन्दन करती है। कहा जाता है कि बीसवीं सदी ‘इतिहास के अन्त’ और विचारधारा तथा कई निश्चितताओं की समाप्ति के साथ ख़त्म हुई। लेकिन इसके साथ ही यह विचार भी पैदा हुआ कि तमाम निश्चितताओं की घोषित समाप्ति अपने आप में एक कट्टरवाद की शक्ल अख़्तियार कर गई, और इसीलिए नए और पुराने ज्ञान को ग़ौर से परखने की आवश्यकता और बढ़ गई। इस पुस्तक में संकलित बारह व्याख्यान ठीक यही काम करते हैं, यानी वे ऐसे कई विचारांे को प्रश्नांकित करते हैं जो समकालीन बौद्धिकता का रूपाकार तय कर रहे हैं और ऐसे तमाम सवालों से जूझते हैं जो हमारे मौजूदा जीवन के केन्द्र में स्थित हैं: मसलन, राष्ट्र-राज्य, पँूजीवाद, आधुनिकता, वैश्वीकरण और भाषा, संस्कृति, शिक्षा और इतिहास से जुड़े अन्य अनेक बिन्दु। इन व्याख्यानों के सभी लेखक अपने-अपने क्षेत्र के अधिकारी विद्वान हैं। अपने विषयों से वे गहरे जुड़े हैं लेकिन उनकी दृष्टि वैश्वीकरण और जनतंत्रीकरण जैसी व्यापक प्रक्रियाओं तक भी जाती है।
