Nietzsche intended to write about final acts of creation and destruction brought about by Zarathustra. However, the book lacks a finale to match that description; its actual ending focuses more on Zarathustra recognizing that his legacy is beginning to perpetuate, and consequently choosing to leave the higher men to their own devices in carrying his legacy forth. Zarathustra also contains the famous dictum "God is dead", which had appeared earlier in The Gay Science. In his autobiographical work Ecce Homo, Nietzsche states that the book's underlying concept is discussed within "the penultimate section of the fourth book" of 'The Gay Science'. It is the eternal recurrence of the same events.L'allemand autorise à traduire Also sprach Zarathustra par Ainsi parla Zarathoustra.

This long poem is a response to Nietzsche's Also sprach Zarathustra, rendering in strong and urgent language Nietzsche's call to a journey away from accepted norms and towards true self-realisation. By turns lyrical and acerbic, and deploying many different voices, the poem offers an imaginative engagement with the challenges posed by Nietzsche's figure of Zarathustra. The cover illustration and the drawings placed throughout the book come from a complementary body of painting and sculpture in which the poet explores the nature of masks and effigies.

In most Western university studies, Greek philosophy is considered the most ancient kind of wisdom, but the Zoroastrian way of life can be traced back to the second millennium BC. The Gathas, hymns or songs attributed to Zarathustra, hold an existential and practical philosophy avant la lettre. It is based on mental exercises and on rituals that have survived thanks to the Zoroastrian religious communities. Not only does the Persian thinker unveil a mental wisdom for us; he also introduces us to an ecological concern and a social practice. There is a cosmopolite dimension to Zarathustra's proto-philosophy that we can all apply in a personal way.

A step-by-step guide to Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Thus Spoke Zarathustra is one of Nietzsche's greatest books, a cross-over text that combines philosophical innovation with literary experimentation. With Zarathustra Nietzsche has attempted a redefinition of the form-content correlation in philosophical writing and as such the text is considered an experiment in philosophical style. It therefore represents a large hurdle for undergraduate students. This projected commentary works on the assumption that access to the philosophical core of the text can only be gained through taking its literary ambitions seriously and that, moreover, these literary ambitions can only be understood as an attempt to realise philosophical ideas. This is a book that is designed to be read alongside Nietzsche and will therefore make the reading and appreciation of the primary material achievable. This approach will be welcomed by students and lecturers alike.
