Mehr als zehn Jahre sind vergangen, seit sich im Wendejahr 1989 der kommunistische Ostblock aufzulösen begann und die Systeme der Staaten des Warschauer Paktes implodierten. Von den darauf folgenden tiefgreifenden Veränderungen in allen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen Polens und (Ost-)Deutschlands sind auch Bildungswesen und Erziehungswissenschaft nicht ausgenommen gewesen. Auf der achten deutsch-polnischen Konferenz der Pädagogischen Fakultät der Universität Warschau und der Erziehungswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Leipzig, die vom 4. bis 7. Mai 2000 im polnischen Wierzba stattfand, wurden die Entwicklungen dieser vergangenen Dekade durch Wissenschaftler beider Staaten einer vergleichenden Zwischenbilanz unterzogen. 26 Beiträge aus verschiedenen Themengebieten spiegeln die Vielfalt der Konferenz und der gesamten grenzüberschreitenden Zusammenarbeit polnischer und deutscher Erziehungswissenschaftler wider, die sich heute umfangreicher und fruchtbarer denn je präsentiert - auch dies ein Ergebnis von zehn veränderungsreichen Jahren.

The Basic Treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) for the first time provided a framework for the exchange of permanent missions and laid the foundation for expanded bilateral cooperation between the two German states. This book charts the progress of inner-German relations in the formative years of the 1970’s and explains how the revival of the German question in the l980's followed from striking changes in East and West German priorities and policies. Dr. Plock assesses the degree of practical cooperation in such areas as trade, travel, and the exchange of media representatives and also identifies the impact of Soviet interests on the inner-German relationship. Dr. Plock notes that despite a clear upgrading in FRG-GDR relations under Chancellors Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt, inner-German progress continues to be hostage to the overall East-West political and security climate. Yet the author sees a bipartisan West German commitment to partnership with the GDR as well as East Berlin's pragmatic approach to the relationship as stabilizing features of the European political landscape, even though the goals of future "Deutschlandpolitik" will continue to remain ill-defined.

Socialist Reformers and the Collapse of the German Democratic Republic explores a neglected aspect of the collapse of Communism in the former East Germany. It focuses on the East Germans' enthusiastic support for re-unification and the transfer of West Germany's political and economic institutions to the East, ignoring those in the German Democratic Republic who wanted to 'reform' socialism within, not destroy it. Their aim was to preserve an independent German Democratic Republic that would pursue an alternative 'third way' between Western capitalism and Stalinist repression. Their vision was a 'better, more beautiful' socialism instead of the 'push and shove society' that they associated with Western capitalism. In their view the 'better, more beautiful' socialism would combine the Western ideals of individual freedom with Marxist concept of collective decision-making and shared wealth. The reformers failed, of course, but their ideas and activities in the fall of 1989 are an essential part of the story that led to present-day Germany.
