In diesem Buch interpretiert Postone die von Marx in seinem Spätwerk entwickelte kritische Theorie grundlegend neu, um die Natur der kapitalistischen Gesellschaft in neuartiger Weise theoretisch erfassen zu können. Seine Interpretation der von Marx analysierten gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse und Herrschaftsformen der kapitalistischen Gesellschaft macht es erforderlich, die zentralen Kategorien der Kritik der politischen Ökonomie zu überdenken. Dazu werden Begriffe entwickelt, die zwei Kriterien genügen: Zum einen sollen sie das Wesen und die geschichtliche Entwicklung der modernen Gesellschaft erfassen, zum anderen soll in ihnen die in den Sozialwissenschaften gängige Dichotomie von Struktur und Handlung bzw. objektiven Lebensumständen und subjektivem Sinn überwunden werden. Im Bezug der Marxschen Theorie auf die aktuellen theoretischen Debatten wird nicht nur zu zeigen sein, inwieweit die Reformulierung dieser Theorie für die Gegenwart relevant ist, sondern daß in ihr auch eine grundsätzliche Kritik an traditionellen marxistischen Theorien und am ehemals »real existierenden Sozialismus« formuliert werden kann. Postone bietet somit die Grundlage für eine kritische Analyse der kapitalistischen Gesellschaftsformation, die im Vergleich zu den bisherigen Analysen überzeugender und der heutigen Zeit angemessener ist. Der Autor: Moishe Postone, geb. 1942, Dr. phil., lehrt Soziologie an der Universität in Chicago und hat »Time, Labour and Social Domination: A Reinterpretation of Marx’ Critical Theory« 1993 bei Cambridge University Press veröffentlicht. Zwischen 1972 und 1982 lebte der Autor in Frankfurt am Main und war Mitarbeiter des Instituts für Sozialforschung. In der Bundesrepublik ist Moishe Postone bekannt geworden durch einen »Offenen Brief« an die Deutsche Linke sowie durch seinen Aufsatz »Antisemitismus und Nationalsozialismus«, der 1979 zum ersten Mal in deutscher Übersetzung in der Frankfurter Studentenzeitung Diskus erschien. Dieser Aufsatz reflektiert die Aufnahme des Filmes »Holocaust« in der BRD und diskutiert den Antisemitismus in der BRD. Der zweite Teil des Beitrages erschien in überarbeiteter Form im Merkur (1982) und wurde in dem von Dan Diner herausgegebenen Band Zivilisationsbruch. Moishe Postone undertakes a fundamental reinterpretation of Karl Marx's mature critical theory. He calls into question many of the presuppositions of traditional Marxist analyses and offers new interpretations of Marx's central arguments. He does so by developing concepts aimed at grasping the essential character and historical development of modern society, and also at overcoming the familiar dichotomies of structure and action, meaning and material life. These concepts lead him to an original analysis of the nature and problems of capitalism and provide the basis for a critique of 'actually existing socialism'. According to this new interpretation, Marx identifies the core of the capitalist system with an impersonal form of social domination generated by labor and the industrial production process are characterized as expressions of domination generated by labor itself and not simply with market mechanisms and private property. Proletarian labor and the industrial production process are characterized as expressions of domination rather than as means of human emancipation. This reinterpretation entails the form of economic growth and the structure of social labor in modern society to the alienation and domination at the heart of capitalism. This reformulation, Postone argues, provides the foundation for a critical social theory that is more adequate to late twentieth-century capitalism.

Wells "Zeitmaschine", mit der die Zukunft erforscht und erschrocken wieder verlassen wird, Endes "Momo", die den Kampf gegen Zeitdiebe aufnimmt, die in eine gemutlich-ruhige Stadt einbrechen, oder Nadolnys "Entdeckung der Langsamkeit" durch den Seefah rer John Franklin bezeugen die Begeisterung fiir Zeit in der Literatur. Visio nare Zeit-Reisen, der Widerstand von Menschen gegen den Zeitklau und das Ringen mit dem Tempo der Zeit faszinieren. Es geht um Beherrschung von Zeit und Beherrschung durch Zeit. Fast andachtig wie ein Traum wird dage gen die Zeitlosigkeit von Avalon und dem Reich der Feen in einigen Pas sagen von Zimmer Bradleys "Nebel von Avalon" stimmungsvoll mit Worten ge l zeichnet . Fur die Philo sophie Aristoteles war Zeit ein Kontinuum. In der Physik ging Newton von einer objektiven, absoluten Zeit aus, die ohne Bezug auf aufiere Gegenstande gleichfOrmig verflieBt (s. u. a.
