Heideggers abfällige Bemerkungen zur christlichen Theologie, auch zur 'pseudotheologischen Luft' an der Nachkriegsuniversität, die ihm sehr zu schaffen mache, lassen die pointierte Deutung von Heideggers unausgesprochenen Absichten bedenkenswert erscheinen: »Indem er [Heidegger] sich gegen das kirchliche System der Heilssicherung wandte, glaubte er vielleicht selber noch 'christlicher' zu sein als die offizielle Theologie« (Jean Grondin). Hans-Georg Gadamer sah hinter Heideggers Versuch der Destruktion der abendländischen Philosophie »das alte, wohlbezeugte Anliegen Heideggers an der originären christlichen Botschaft«. Heideggers Beziehung zum christlichen Glauben war – nach der anfangs klaren Zustimmung – in seiner mittleren Zeit gestört und in seinen späteren Jahren schwankend und zwiespältig geworden. Aber das tiefe Interesse an der Aneignung der christlichen Tradition ist aus seinen Schriften und Vorlesungen, aus Briefen, Seminarprotokollen und Berichten belegt. Das 2006 veranstaltete Mainzer Symposion zum 30sten Todestag Heideggers galt der Erörterung seiner Beziehung zur christlichen Überlieferung an ausgewählten Stationen seines Denkwegs. Heidegger selbst hat die Frage nach seiner 'Herkunft' aus dem Christlichen ausdrücklich bejaht. Neu publizierte Texte in der 'Ausgabe letzter Hand' förderten bisher unbeachtete Perspektiven ans Licht, die zu einem klareren Bild führen. Bereits in seiner frühen Vorlesung Phänomenologie der Anschauung und des Ausdrucks (1920) verkündete Heidegger programmatisch: »Es besteht die Notwendigkeit einer prinzipiellen Auseinandersetzung mit der griechischen Philosophie und der Verunstaltung der christlichen Existenz durch sie. Die wahrhafte Idee der christlichen Philosophie; christlich keine Etikette für eine schlechte und epigonenhafte griechische. Der Weg zu einer ursprünglichen christlichen – griechentumfreien – Theologie«. Der Band nimmt Heideggers Stellung zu den Autoren in den Blick, die für seinen Rekurs auf das christliche Erbe besonders wichtig waren. Hinweis des Verlages. Herrmann Heidegger hat den Verlag aufgefordert, zu dem Beitrag von Otto Pöggeler auf Seite 183 klarzustellen, dass Martin Heidegger seine politische Haltung zu keiner Zeit zu dem Entschluß geführt habe, »aus dem Leben zu scheiden«. Diese Behauptung sei unseriös und nicht zu begründen. Wir kommen dem Wunsch von Herrmann Heidegger hiermit nach.

Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) is considered one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century in spite of his well-known transgressions—his complicity with National Socialism and his inability to show remorse or compassion for its victims. In The Duplicity of Philosophy’s Shadow, Elliot R. Wolfson intervenes in a debate that has seen much attention in scholarly and popular media from a unique perspective, as a scholar of Jewish mysticism and philosophy who has been profoundly influenced by Heidegger’s work. Wolfson sets out to probe Heidegger’s writings to expose what remains unthought. In spite of Heidegger’s explicit anti-Semitic statements, Wolfson reveals some crucial aspects of his thinking—including criticism of the biological racism and militant apocalypticism of Nazism—that betray an affinity with dimensions of Jewish thought: the triangulation of the concepts of homeland, language, and peoplehood; Jewish messianism and the notion of historical time as the return of the same that is always different; inclusion, exclusion, and the status of the other; the problem of evil in kabbalistic symbolism. Using Heidegger’s own methods, Wolfson reflects on the inextricable link of truth and untruth and investigates the matter of silence and the limits of speech. Can time exist independently of consciousness? In antiquity this question was often framed as an enquiry into the relationship of time and soul. Aristotle cautiously suggested that time could not exist without a soul that is counting it. This proposal was controversially debated among his commentators. The present book offers an account of this debate beginning from Aristotle’s own statement of the problem in Book IV of the Physics. Subsequent chapters discuss Aristotle’s Peripatetic followers, Boethus of Sidon and Alexander of Aphrodisias; his Neoplatonic readers, Plotinus and Simplicius; and early Christian authors, Gregory of Nyssa and Augustine. At the centre of the debate stood the relation between the subjective time in the soul and the objective time of the cosmos. Both could be seen as united in the world soul as the seat of subjective time on a cosmic scale. But no solution to the problem was final. No theory gained general acceptance. The book shows the fascinating variety and plurality of ideas about time and soul throughout antiquity. Throughout antiquity, the problem of time and soul remained as intriguing as it proved intractable.

In bewußter Ausklammerung der theologischen Fragestellung nach der Zeit im Ausgang von der Ewigkeit entfaltet der Vortrag die Frage nach der Zeit in einführender Weise in Abhebung gegen den überlieferten und den alltäglichen Zeitbegriff. Als Natur- und Weltzeit wird die Zeit seit Aristoteles als das Worin des veränderlich Begegnenden gefaßt und schließlich in der Physik als solche zum Gegenstand der Messung einer nicht-umkehrbaren Folge von Jetztpunkten nivelliert. Die phänomenologische analytik der Begegnisart der Zeit, d.h. des Wie des Zeithabens des alltäglichen Daseins, verweist jedoch auf eine ursprünglichere Dimension der Zeitlichkeit in ihrem Bezug zum Dasein, auf den bereits Augustinus hingewiesen hatte. Durch vorgängige Anzeige einiger Grundstrukturen des Daseins enthüllt Heidegger das Zeitlichsein als "die fundamentale Aussage des Daseins hinsichtlich seines Seins". In der äußersten Möglichkeit des Daseins, dem Vorlaufen zu seinem eigensten, gewissen und doch unbestimmten Ende (Tod), ist das Dasein seine Zukunft. Es ist diese so, daß es in diesem Zukünftigsein auf seine Vergangenheit und Gegenwart zurückkommt und in und aus dieser Zukünftigkeit sich seine Zeit gibt, d.h. eröffnet. Die überlieferten und die alltäglichen Weisen der Zeitauslegung sind demgegenüber primär aus dem Zeitlichkeitsmodus der Gegenwart geschöpft und überspringen die ursprüngliche Zeitlichkeit des Daseins.
