The book deals in detail with previously understudied language contact settings in the Balkans (South East Europe) that present a continuum between ethnic and linguistic separation and symbiosis among groups of people. The studies in this volume achieve several aims: they critically assess the Balkan Sprachbund theory; they analyse general contact theories against the background of new, original, representative field and historical Greek, Albanian, Romance, Slavic and Judesmo data; they employ and contribute to recent methods of research on linguistic convergence in bilingual societies; they propose new general assessments of extra- and intralinguistic factors of Balkanization over the centuries; and they outline prospects for future research. There is an emerging perspective in the discipline of linguistics that takes expressivity as one of the key components of human communication and grammatical structure. Expressivity refers to the use of grammar in natural languages to convey sensory information in a creative way, for example through reduplication, iconicity, ideophones and onomatopoeia. Expressives are more commonly associated with non-European languages, so their presence in European languages has so far been under-documented. With contributions from a team of leading scholars, this pioneering book redresses that balance by providing copious, detailed information about the expressive systems of a set of European languages. It comprises a collection of original surveys of expressivity in languages as diverse as Hungarian, Finnish, Turkish, Scots, German, Greek, Italian, Catalan, Breton and Basque, all with the common goal of challenging structuralist assumptions about the role of syntax, and showing how expressivity is both typologically diverse and universal.

Solidarity and responsibility may certainly be recognized as the central ideas of the year 2020. The basic reason for such a statement, in central- and east-European perspective, was the 40th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements in Poland and the resulting development of the Solidarity trade union and social movement constituting the key catalyst of pro-democratic changes in the part of Europe. That anniversary was overshadowed, how ever, by another event - a global one, i.e. the COVID-19 pandemic, which turned upside down the former order of things and in a way forced us to thoroughly revise our attitude to the surrounding world. Solidarity, embraced by responsibility, becomes a positive counterpoint, both in the real and the symbolic dimension, for social integration, for building mutual trust and understanding, sensitivity, and a culture of cooperation in the light of which the Other is a being that is equal to us. The articles in this volume offer critical thought, in both a diachronic and a synchronic perspective, on the role, meaning and place of narrative, discourses, experiences and representations in the sphere of ethics, esthetics and culture (broadly understood) in the spirit of the new humanities and in particular its leading phrases: performative, affective and ethical (which is part of the aspect of affirmation) which place a strong emphasis on the causative interactive dimension of an entity acting towards both sentient beings and inanimate objects.

Despite Britain entering the 20th century as the dominant world power, public discourses were imbued with a cultural pessimism and rising social anxiety. Through this study, Samuel Foster explores how this changing domestic climate shaped perceptions of other cultures, and Britain's relationship to them, focusing on those Balkan territories that formed the first Yugoslavia from 1918 to 1941. Yugoslavia in the British Imagination examines these connections and demonstrates how the popular image of the region's peasantry evolved from that of foreign 'Other' to historical victim - suffering at the hand of modernity's worst excesses and symbolizing Britain's perceived decline. This coincided with an emerging moralistic sense of British identity that manifested during the First World War. Consequently, Yugoslavia was legitimized as the solution to peasant victimization and, as Foster's nuanced analysis reveals, enabling Britain's imagined (and self-promoted) revival as civilization's moral arbiter. Drawing on a range of previously unexplored archival sources, this compelling transnational analysis is an important contribution to the study of British social history and the nature of statehood in the modern Balkans.
