Nur selten ist bislang der Versuch gestartet worden, die Frühe Neuzeit als Epoche der doppelten Expansion zu betrachten: einer geo-politischen Expansion in Neue Welten zum einen und einer wissenschaftlichen Expansion in die kleinsten wie größten, verborgenen und ideellen Welten zum anderen. Diesem Problem stellen sich die Autoren mit Beiträgen aus der Geschichtswissenschaft, der Kunst- und Religionsgeschichte, der Islamwissenschaft und Sinologie, der Ethnologie und den Literaturwissenschaften. In welchem Verhältnis standen diese beiden Expansionsbewegungen zueinander? In welcher Weise unterschied sich dadurch die frühneuzeitlich-europäische Expansion von Expansionen anderer Epochen und Regionen? Die im ersten Teil dieses Bandes versammelten Beiträge untersuchen Kontinuitäten und Brüche der frühneuzeitlichen europäischen Expansion, indem sie deren mittelalterlichen Voraussetzungen herausstellen und diese mit dem zeitgenössischen chinesischen, russischen und maghrebinisch-muslimischen Verständnis von Expansion vergleichen. Die wissenschaftshistorischen Studien des zweiten Teils wiederum zeigen, wie sehr die gegenseitige Verstärkung der beiden Expansions-Bewegungen die Auseinandersetzung mit antiken und mittelalterlichen Denktraditionen forcierte - eine Auseinandersetzung, die keineswegs als Bruch mit der Antike zu interpretieren ist. Aus unterschiedlichem Blickwinkel erschließen die Verfasser des dritten Teils das treibende Moment in diesem Expansionsprozeß: die Konkurrenz der europäischen Staaten untereinander.

Roman wars, like those of later times, took place in a landscape - a landscape not only consisting of mountains, plains and rivers, but also of men tilling the soil, travelling across sea or land, or employing other means in their struggle for survival (and even happiness). This book undertakes to examine Roman wars in this context of the natural and human environment. Roman warfare is generally examined from the vierpoint of the ancient authors on whose narratives our understanding depends. As a consequence, however, Roman wars seem to have become events that took place on the pages of a book rather than in the environment of the Mediterranean world. The way Roman wars were fought was determined by the geography and climate of the Mediterranean peninsulas, by the ecological restraints on agriculture and transport, and by the economic and social structures of the society of which the armies were a significant part. This book relates warfare to one of the main conditions of survival: it examines on the one hand the food supply of the many thousands that manned the Roman armies, and on the other the impact of war on the food supply of those people not waging war.

This volume is divided into four sections: late medieval devotion in the Netherlands; medieval Christian pilgrimage; the medieval cult of St. James the Great and Erasmiana. Variety and coherence sound the keynote in the title and the contents of the book. Religious concepts and expressions of religious faith such as pilgrimages and indulgences are representative of late-medieval Christianity. In this book they refer specifically to the medieval cult of St. James the Great, while for Erasmus they were an object of his critical consideration. The whole book can be read in the light of the debate about the tension between an appreciation for outward signs of faith, and the inward experience of religious belief, which Erasmus considered an absolute necessity.
