In his new book, Wounded: The Legacy of War, Bryan Adams presents portraits of young British soldiers who have suffered life-changing injury in Iraq and Afghanistan or during training. His lens bears witness to their scars, disability and disfigurement. This unexpected directness challenges the viewer. At the same time the images reveal the sheer grit and bravery of the victims who, despite personal sacrifice, live each day with resolute vim, vigor and dignity. What we see are staggering portraits of inspiring individuals who whilst not faltering have stood the test of war and lived to tell the tale. The images come with haunting interviews which provide a narrative to each personal journey to recovery.

Polysemy In Cognitive Linguistics written by H. Cuyckens and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-01-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In Cognitive Linguistics, polysemy is regarded as a categorizing phenomenon; i.e., related meanings of words form categories centering around a prototype and bearing family resemblance relations to one another. Under this polysemy = categorization view, the scope of investigation has been gradually broadened from categories in the lexical and lexico-grammatical domain to morphological, syntactic, and phonological categories. The papers in this volume illustrate the importance of polysemy in describing these various categories. A first set of papers analyzes the polysemy of such lexical categories as prepositions and scalar particles, and looks at the import of polysemy in frame-based dictionary definitions. A second set shows that noun classes, case, and locative prefixes constitute meaningful and polysemous categories. Three papers, then, pay attention to polysemy from a psychological perspective, looking for psychological evidence of polysemy in lexical categories.

I n order to appreciate properly what we are doing in this book it is necessary to realize that our approach to linguistic theorizing differs from the prevailing views. Our approach can be described by indicating what distinguishes it from the methodological ideas current in theoretical linguistics, which I consider seriously misguided. Linguists typically construe their task in these days as that of making exceptionless generalizations from particular examples. This explanatory strategy is wrong in several different ways. It presupposes that we can have "intuitions" about particular examples, usually examples invented by the linguist himself or herself, reliable and sharp enough to serve as a basis of sharp generalizations. It also presupposes that we cannot have equally reliable direct access to general linguistic regularities. Both assumptions appear to me extremely dubious, and the first of them has in effect been challenged by linguists like Dwight Bol inger. There is also some evidence that the degree of unanimity among linguists is fairly low when it comes to less clear cases, even in connection with such relatively simple questions as grammaticality (acceptability). For this reason we have tried to rely more on quotations from contemporary fiction, newspapers and magazines than on linguists' and philosophers' ad hoc examples. I also find it strange that some of the same linguists as believe that we all possess innate ideas about general characteristics of humanly possible grammars assume that we can have access to them only via their particular consequences.

The "Introduction to Altaic Linguistics" is designed as a manual for university students. The second part presents a brief outline of the history of studying Altaic linguistics. It also contains a number of bibliographical data and bibliographies of famous scholars. The third part gives a brief history of the Altaic theory. The subsequent portions of the book deal with problems of mutual influences of the Altaic languages (e.g., the Turkic influence of Mongolian), Altaic influences in non-Altaic languages (e.g., the Turkic influence on Sayan-Samoyed, or Mari), non-Altaic influences in Altaic languages (e.g. Sogdian elements in Turkic), and structural features common to all Altaic languages.

In the winter of 1993-1994, essays were commissioned on the topic of ambiguity and underspecification. All papers received were subjected to a thorough review process. The present volume, comprising ten self-contained papers and an introductory chapter, is the result. Natural language is known for the ambiguity of its expressions. Whereas artificial forms of communication tend to be designed in such a way that ambiguity is reduced to a minimum, natural language is ambiguous at various 'levels' of interpretation. At a low (e.g., speech recognition) level, a signal can be ambiguous between various utterances; at a higher (semantic) level, a fully recognised utterance can be used to express various different propositions; and at an even higher (pragmatic) level, a proposition may be used for various different purposes. The present volume focuses on ambiguities of the second kind, which are sometimes called semantic ambiguities, or mostly just ambiguities, when there is no likelihood of confusion.

Anaphora is the study of referential relationships in language. Given the great flowering of the study of this topic in the last decade, it is time for a book that reports on the major results of recent research and sets the stage for further inquiry. The authors represented in Anaphora: A Reference Guide are among the world's leading researchers on anaphora and are ideally suited to meet this goal. Their work draws on theoretical principles and methodologies in linguistics, cognitive psychology, and philosophy, as well as the integrated, broad perspective of cognitive science. These stimulating reports of cutting-edge research will be useful to both undergraduate and graduate students and will find a large audience among professional researchers of anaphora and scholars who want to catch up on what is new and exciting in the area.
