Der Expressionismus hat eine nahezu unüberschaubare Zahl an Periodika hervorgebracht, in denen sich politische und ästhetische Debatten und Manifeste ebenso finden wie bildkünstlerische und literarische Werke. Während die 'großen' Zeitschriften wie Der Sturm und Die Aktion häufig im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit stehen, leisteten gerade die vielen kurzlebigeren Publikationsorgane einen bedeutenden Anteil zur Selbstverortung lokaler Künstler*innenzirkel und zur Verbreitung des Expressionismus jenseits der Zentren. Die Zeitschriften des Expressionismus sind auch deshalb eine so zentrale Quelle, weil sich die Strömung in lokalen wie überregionalen Künstler*innengruppen organisierte, die häufig ihr eigenes Publikationsorgan hatten, das sie zur Verbreitung ihrer Programmatik und künstlerischen Produktion sowie zum Austausch über aktuelle ästhetische und gesellschaftliche Fragen nutzten. Wie stark sich die einzelnen Zeitschriftenprojekte ähneln – und insofern ein gemeinsames Bild des Expressionismus erzeugen – und in welchem Ausmaß sich kontextspezifische Variationen ergeben, die eine Differenzierung der bisherigen Diskussion über den Expressionismus notwendig machen, lässt sich nur durch eine ausführliche Sichtung des Quellenmaterials beantworten, zu der der Band einen Auftakt bilden möchte. Der Band wirft einen Blick auf dieses bisher vernachlässigte Themenfeld und deutet die Desiderate und Zugangsmöglichkeiten an, die nicht zuletzt den Begriff der 'kleinen Zeitschrift' selbst betreffen. Die Beiträge diskutieren Grenzfälle der Zuordnung zu den kleinen expressionistischen Zeitschriften und beschreiben die Publikationen im Kontext ihrer (kunst-)politischen Auseinandersetzungen, Entstehungsumstände und Diskurszusammenhänge.
