This book explores social transformations which led to the establishment of medieval Hum (future Herzegovina) and Bosnia in the period from ca. 450 to 1200 AD using the available written and material sources. It follows social and political developments in these historical regions from the last centuries of Late Antiquity, through the social collapse of the seventh and eighth centuries, and into their new medieval beginnings in the ninth century. Fragmentary and problematic sources from this period were, in the past, often used to justify modern political claims to these contested territories and incorporate them into the ‘national biographies’ of the Croats, Serbs and Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), or to support the ‘Yugoslavizing’ and other ideological discourses. The book goes beyond ideological and national mythologemes of the past in order to provide a new historical narrative that brings more light to this region placed on the frontiers of both the medieval West and the Byzantine empire. It provides new views of the period between ca. 450 and 1200 for the parts of Western Balkans and Eastern Adriatic, brings the most recent local historical and archaeological research to the Anglophone readership and contributes to the scholarship of the late antique and early medieval Mediterranean study of this very poorly known area. The book is intended for academic audiences interested in history and archaeology of the Late Antiquity and early Middle Ages, but also to all those interested in the general history of Herzegovina, Bosnia, Dalmatia and the Balkans.

ORBIS ROMANVS je djelo udžbeničkog karaktera, čiji je nastanak uzrokovala potreba za jednim svestranim radom na bosansko – hrvatskom – srpskom jeziku, koji bi prikazao rimski svijet i njegovu civilizaciju, posebnu u njenom klasičnom periodu. To je podrazumijevalo da se historija starog Rima i zemalja kojima je dominirao ne promatra samo kroz vizuru političke i vojne povijesti, što je uglavnom najčešća pojava u općoj historiografiji. Udžbenik je zato i koncipiran da čitalac u sebi razvije misao da je rimski pronalazak betona značajniji za čovječanstvo nego što su to bile mnoge bitke u kojima je trijumfiralo rimsko oružje. Uz to, intencija udžbenika je i da razbije uvriježene tabue i predrasude čitatelja, a posebno studenata o klasičnoj rimskoj civilizaciji. Djelo je iznimno opširnog karaktera, jer je to iziskivala sama potreba bavljenja ovom tematikom. Kako bi se čitaocima olakšalo praćenje i razumijevanje teksta, nastojalo se da tekst ne bude suhoparan niti samo nabacivanje golih činjenica, nego da se kombinacijom podataka, slika, ilustracija, karti, anegdotalnih primjera i zaključaka prezentira rimski svijet koliko je to god moguće bolje. Zato se na momente može činiti da udžbenik pred javnost pruža jednu priču sa svojim akterima i radnjom, u kojoj se likovi i njihovi doživljaji izmijenjuju kao u kakvom serijskom programu.

During the excavations at the site Pod near Bugojno, which took place in July 1959, under the leadership of archaeologist Borivoje Čović, a shallow and smaller vessel was discovered with an inscription visible on the outer, upper rim. Due to the inaccuracy and irregularity of the engraved letters, the use of ligatures, and relative wear and tear, the inscription was difficult to read and decipher. B. Čović suggested that it was created by the local speech of an Illyrian community which lived in settlement Pod, written in the Greek alphabet from the pre-classical, archaic period. Some time later, Radmila Šalabalić analyzed the inscription in detail, proposing the Italic thesis, that is, the identification of the text with letters and signs typical of the Etruscan and Umbrian alphabets, while the language in which it was written remained undetermined. R. Šalabalić put forward, albeit tentatively and cautiously, hypothesis that the inscription contains a dedication to Etruscan deities. Aleksandar Stipčević expressed the opinion that the text was created as an imitation of an inscription by an "illiterate Illyrian potter". However, despite the presented conclusions, assumptions, hypotheses and even speculations, the secrets of this inscription have not been revealed until today. It is a real possibility that the inscription was created in accordance with the sphere of religious life of the community that lived in fortress of Pod in the Iron Age. In this settlement, an object was also discovered that served as a local shrine of the celestial and solar deity, and with which the vessel found was possibly in a certain correlation. Bearing in mind the facts that the vessel was a domestic product, that the inscription was the work of a local man, that the inscription was written in North Italian letters of the Umbrian type, it can lead to a new attempt to reveal the secrets of the inscription, which is inventoried in the National Museum under the number 46 417. An unavoidable part of these new discoveries were also made by paying attention to pre-Abrahamic religious relics that have been preserved in the lives and culture of communities living in the area of the former Illyrian lands. Most of all these relics were preserved in the mountain communities that spoke todays Albanian dialects. After collecting all previous knowledge about the text and the vessel on which it was written, the first thing to do was to revise the previous theses, including a proposal for a new transcription of the letters from the inscription. When a new transcribed sequence was obtained, it was started to be divided into possible words. The large number of ligatures, although it made it difficult to detect individual letters, made it easier to divide them into words. It is realistic to assume that if the letters were joined in one ligature, they were also within the same word. When such a ligature division was made, similarities of combinations of such letters were tried to be found in the Etruscan, Umbrian and Albanian language (which is considered to still contain the most linguistic elements from the Illyrian ethnic and linguistic continuum). From the very beginning, it was noticed that most of the words have etymological connections with certain present-day Albanian words and some remnants of ancient, "pagan", non-Ahrahamanic beliefs of isolated Albanian communities. After that, a paraphrased reconstruction of the text was possible. The text of the inscription itself was apparently in the Illyrian language and would have been of a dedicatory, votive character where the merchant, whose name is still unidentified, sacrifices/offers wine, grapes or Ferula communis, its juice (dried or not) to the Illyrian deity who has in his name and the epithet of father. That deity was of the celestial – solar luminous type and was derived from the same supreme Proto-Indo-European deity and can be interpreted as the Greek Zeus and the Roman Jupiter.

Second part of book is on english In available literary sources and epigraphic monuments written in Latin and refer to Illyrian provinces, which are found and published to this day, there is a mention of institution of principes of civitates peregrinae. In roman classical world, word princeps (plural principes) was very often used in various contexts to conceptually define different contents. In its literal, fundamental meaning, it could be translated as "first, most important, most prominent, chief" and from that meaning it developed, as Roman state developed, expanded and complicated, into a nomenclature for a number of institutions, services, ranks, honorary titles (e.g. princeps iuventutis) in Roman state, army, administration and provincial administration. Of all these contents, the most famous is that which referred to the head of state in political system established by Augustus, called Principate, which lasted almost 300 years until Diocletian and which could be translated as "the first citizen". In institutional - administrative arrangement of civitates peregrinae, principes were called domestic, local dignitaries and officials, regardless of whether they were holders of Roman citizenship or not.

Posthomersko helensko naseljavanje na području južne Italije i Sicilije intenziviralo se od VIII. st. i do kraja VI. st. p. n. e. ustanovljena je široka zona u kojoj je dominirala helenska civilizacija. Toliko je bila gustina naseljenosti da je područje na krajnjem jugu Italije nazvano „Velika Helada/Grčka“. Od tih mnogih helenskih apoikija na području zapadno od Jonskog mora, za razvitak civilizacije u Italiji i origines rimskog svijeta je suštinski značajna bila Kima na kampanskoj obali. Preko nje su italski narodi primili čitav niz naprednih kulturnih tekovina, od kojih je najvažnije pismo. Kima je u svome helenskom obliku postojala oko 350 godina i u tome periodu je odigrala enormno značenje, koje ni do danas nije na adekvatan način istraženo. Za rimski svijet helenska Kima je utjecala i preko fenomena sibile i sibilskih knjiga, kao jednog fenomena koji je u određenoj mjeri utjecao i na oblikovanje općeg rimskog „nacionalnog“ i kulturnog identiteta. Veći dio obalne linije južne Italije je bio u pravom smislu helenski u periodu od VIII. do V. st. p. n. e. U apoikijama na tome području su se značajno utemeljile i određene filozofske misli i ideje, koje će oblikovati mediteransku i zapadnu civilizaciju. Na Siciliji naseljeni Heleni će se postupno orijentirati prema Sirakuzi, kao najjačoj apoikiji, poglavito poradi feničansko – kartaginskog prisustva na zapadu otoka. Postepeno će Rimska Republika u okvire svoje hegemonije apsorbirati sav helenski svijet Italije i Sicilije.
