The Ecstasy, The Energy And The Courage Of Your Journey A blank spot on the map dances with your imagination. What treasures might it hold? As you swing your leg over the top tube, your touring bike allows you unlimited freedom of flight for your body, mind and spirit. Slip your hands into your riding gloves. Grab those handlebars. Press your feet onto the pedals. Click the brake handles. Slide your derriere onto the saddle. Look toward the distant horizon that beckons your dreams. Feel the energy coursing through your body. Make that first pedal stroke downward as your thighs lift you onto adventure highway. Time means nothing now. It slips away as easily as grains of sand on a wind-swept beach. But those grains only trade places. On your bike, you move into that blank spot-new locations in the passage of time. The pedaling becomes incidental-like breathing. The hills and mountains come and go-your legs powering over them in a kind of winsome trance. Grappling with headwinds brings determination; while riding a tailwind fetches ecstasy. Rain drenches you during a bicycle adventure, yet promises a rainbow. Bicycle travel demands you dig deep into the art of living. Each challenge lets you know you're vibrantly alive. You transform into a state of bliss, much like an eagle gliding over majestic mountains. You see them soaring, just living. You soar with them as you glide down a mountain grade. Those moments present you with uncommon experiences that give your life eternal expectation. That's bicycle adventure!" Frosty Wooldridge, six continent world bicycle traveler.

Cycling is going through a revolution. Over half a million of us take to our bicycles every day and, as a result, the public image of cycling has been transformed. No longer the preserve of the marginal and eccentric few, it's now considered cool to travel on two wheels. Guardian journalist Matt Seaton is one of cycling's greatest advocates. An out-and-out bike nut, he rides to work during the week, races at the weekend and has even been known to attend transport policy conferences in between. In this collection, Seaton not only explores a nation's rediscovered love of cycling, he also investigates the issues that affect all cyclists, from potholes and town planning to cycling etiquette and aesthetics. Whether you're a commuter or a competitive racer, a recreational rider or a cycle tourist, this book will prove irresistible - and enlightening - reading.

Paris in the springtime... Bright, romantic, inspiring... For one American middle manager in Paris, not so much. With a full afternoon of meetings booked, a pressured global exec called "Ryder" stepped off the red-eye and ran smack into the wall of a classic Paris taxi strike. Deadlines looming for their first presentation with combative French colleagues, Ryder went with the fastest transport option available - a moto taxi, hyped by a young Frenchman dressed head to toe in leather. Racing the clock, Ryder had the hair-raising ride of a lifetime, hanging on for dear life to the back of a sport touring motorcycle that did things in traffic you can only do in France. And the result? A surprising mix of lessons in life, insights into the unique French temperament, productivity tips for working globally, essential motorcycle safety instructions, and the kind of Zen practice you can't get sitting cross-legged at home. Why not come along for the ride?

An Alternative History of Bicycles and Motorcycles: Two-Wheeled Transportation and Material Culture accounts for the nineteenth-century creation and development of two-wheeled vehicles, both human-powered and motorized. Specifically, the book focuses on the period from 1885 (which saw the appearance, simultaneously, of the Safety bicycle and the Einspur, the first motorcycle) to 1920, while exploring implications for later bicycling and motorcycling. We argue that invention of these vehicles, rather than the product of gifted individuals, should be seen as the consequence of a number of historical, economic, cultural and political forces that intersect so unpredictably that the notion of a genius inventor is reductive. The common evolutionary model of development from the bicycle to the motorcycle oversimplifies both the technology and its origins. Stripping the vehicles of all their material and cultural associations, such a model fails to advance our understanding of the devices, their creators, and their riders. Taking a contemporary vehicle and tracing its lineage creates a false sense of evolutionary necessity in its creation, and fails to account for the many possible developmental paths that were, for whatever reason, abandoned. By contrast, our book adopts a material culture approach, a form of inquiry that stresses the connections between artifacts and social relations. We consider not simply the bicycle and motorcycle as material objects but focus also on the complex socio-political and economic convergences that produced the materials, materials that in turn themselves shaped the vehicles’ appearance, function, and adoption by riders.

The Art Of Cycling written by James Hibbard and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-02 with Sports & Recreation categories.

A meditative love letter to the sport of cycling, revealing how cycling can shed new light on age-old questions of selfhood, meaning, and purpose. Interweaving cycling, philosophy, and personal narrative, The Art of Cycling provides readers with a deep understanding of the highs and lows of being an elite athlete, the limits of approaching any sporting pursuit from a strictly rational perspective, and how the philosophical and often counterintuitive lessons derived from sport can be applied to other areas of life. Accessible to everyone from the hardened racer to the casual fan, this updated American edition of The Art of Cycling engages the history of thought through the lens of cycling to undermine much of what is typically thought of as "intellectual," breathing new vitality into life, and countering society's obsession with progress and drive towards the abstract, detached, and virtual.

"The relations between eastern and western cultures have long been a neglected topic, and this careful and intelligent look at a small but significant part of those relations is most welcome."--Thomas McEvilley, author of The Shape of Ancient Thought "How wonderful that Jacquelynn Baas has seen the light of the Buddha's smile shining from faraway Asia into the realm of the art of modern times in what we think of as the West! . . . Her work reveals how some of our most influential artists explored and expressed the sophisticated perceptions and joyful energy emanating from the realm of Buddhist Asia."--Robert A. F. Thurman "As a Buddhist scholar and artist I welcome this thoughtful and richly detailed study of how many aspects of Buddhism have stimulated, invigorated, and enriched Western arts over the past 150 years."--Stephen Addiss, author of The Art of Zen "A crucial contribution to modern art studies, this high-spirited text surveys Western artists awakened by the wisdom of the East, from Monet and Duchamp to O'Keeffe to Martin. It is a thoughtful book about thoughtful artists, their values and their visions, with a lot to offer general readers and specialists alike."--Charles Stuckey, Associate Professor of Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Photography Theory written by James Elkins and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-18 with Art categories.

Photography Theory presents forty of the world's most active art historians and theorists, including Victor Burgin, Joel Snyder, Rosalind Krauss, Alan Trachtenberg, Geoffrey Batchen, Carol Squiers, Margaret Iversen and Abigail Solomon-Godeau in animated debate on the nature of photography. Photography has been around for nearly two centuries, but we are no closer to understanding what it is. For some people, a photograph is an optically accurate impression of the world, for others, it is mainly a way of remembering people and places. Some view it as a sign of bourgeois life, a kind of addiction of the middle class, whilst others see it as a troublesome interloper that has confused people's ideas of reality and fine art to the point that they have difficulty even defining what a photograph is. For some, the whole question of finding photography's nature is itself misguided from the beginning. This provocative second volume in the Routledge The Art Seminar series presents not one but many answers to the question what makes a photograph a photograph?
