First published in 1988, Priapea is a collection of eighty Latin epigrams, English translated, that make up the corpus Priapeorum, which displays remarkable skill, artistry and wit. Their elegance of style contrasts strikingly with their indecent subject matter. The poems are mostly spoken by, or addressed to, the lewd god Priapus, famous for the size and tenseness of his erect membrum virile or phallus. A main theme is the threatened use of his formidable organ to assault obscenely any intruders that he may catch thieving, but requests and offsprings made to Priapus, and his comparison of himself with other deities, also figure prominently among the poems. This book will be of interest of literature, classical studies, and translation studies.

Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist ein besseres Verständnis der Kommunikation zwischen Livius und seinen Lesern über Geschichte und die Analyse der vor diesem Hintergrund zu beobachtenden literarischen Techniken. Zu diesem Zweck wird der Text hier programmatisch in seiner Gesamtheit in den Blick genommen und bei seiner Interpretation stets die Perspektive des Rezipienten einbezogen. In einem ersten Schritt wird ab urbe condita zunächst in den politischen und kulturellen Kontext seiner Entstehungszeit im 1. Jh. v. Chr. eingeordnet, die durch einen vielfachen Wandel, nicht zuletzt auf dem Gebiet der Produktion und Rezeption von Historiographie, geprägt war (Kapitel II). Analysiert man Livius’ Werk unter dieser Prämisse, lassen sich verschiedene Darstellungsstrategien – vor allem der abwechslungsreiche Umgang mit dem Verhältnis von Zeit und Erzählung (Kapitel III), die zahlreichen Elemente multiperspektivischen Erzählens (Kapitel IV) und die verschiedenen Techniken zur Erzeugung von Spannung (Kapitel V) – benennen, als deren gemeinsames Ziel die stärkere Involvierung des Rezipienten in den Text gelten kann. Damit geht dann nicht nur eine intensivere Leserbindung, sondern auch die Erzeugung eines Geschichtsbildes einher, in dem historische Ereignisse in ihrem Verlauf und in ihrer Bewertung deutlich offener erscheinen und daher eine aktivere Form der Partizipation des Lesers verlangen.

A common accusation made against Origen is that he dissolves history into intellectual abstraction and that his eschatology (if this is recognized at all) is notoriously obscure. In this new work, the author draws on an impressive range of bibliography to consider Origen’s Philosophy of History and Eschatology in the widest context of facts, documents and streams of thought, including Classical and Late Antiquity Greek Philosophy, Gnosticism, Hebraism and Patristic Thought, both before Origen and well after his death. Against claims that he causes history to evaporate into barren idealism, his thought is shown to be firmly grounded on his particular vision of historical occurences. Confronting assertions that Origen has no eschatological ideas, his eschatology is shown rather to have made a distinctive mark throughout his works, both explicitly and tacitly. In Origen’s view, history was the foundation of scriptural interpretation, a teleological process determined by factors and functions such as providence – prophecy – promise – expectation – realization – anticipation – faith – anticipation – hope – awaiting for – fulfilment – end. Since 1986, the author has argued for the unpopular thesis that Origen is, in many respects, an anti-Platonist. Nevertheless, the author casts light upon the Aristotelian rationale of Origen’s doctrine of apokatastasis, arguing that its validity is bolstered by ontological rather than historical premises. The extent of Origen’s influence upon what is currently regarded as ‘orthodoxy’ turns out to be far wider and more profound than has hitherto been acknowledged.
