The articles in this issue deal with various aspects of the on-going re-evaluation and reconsideration of the far-reaching political, economic and ideological transformation of China in the 1950s, exploring the broader themes in various subfields and from different perspectives. There is a special focus on specific developments in the early 1950s: on land reform and the significance of this for the political consolidation of the new People's Republic, on state violence and mass crimes; on the state discourse on housewives and housework; on the establishment of Chinese as a foreign language at Peking University from the perspective of an eye-witness. Two studies deal with developments in the field of historiography: the first analyses the discussions of Chinese intellectuals in the late 1950s who were seeking to establish historical legitimacy; the second highlights recent debates among historians and intellectuals who have been creating new master narratives and have been involved, in pluralistic terms, in newly constructing the history of the 1950s, especially with regard to the Great Leap Forward and the 1957 Anti-Rightist Movement.

Exploring the works of key women writers within their cultural, artistic and socio-political contexts, this book considers changes in the perception of women in early modern China. The sixteenth century brought rapid developments in technology, commerce and the publishing industry that saw women emerging in new roles as both consumers and producers of culture. This book examines the place of women in the cultural elite and in society more generally, reconstructing examples of particular women’s personal experiences, and retracing the changing roles of women from the late Ming to the early Qing era (1580-1700). Providing rich detail of exceptionally fine, interesting and engaging literary works, this book opens fascinating new windows onto the lives, dreams, nightmares, anxieties and desires of the authors and the world out of which they emerged.

In The Poet Zheng Zhen (1806-1864) and the Rise of Chinese Modernity, J. D. Schmidt provides the first detailed study in a Western language of one of China's greatest poets and explores the nineteenth-century background to Chinese modernity, challenging the widely held view that this is largely of Western origin. The volume contains a study of Zheng's life and times, an examination of his thought and literary theory, and four chapters studying his highly original contributions to poetry on the human realm, nature verse, narrative poetry, and the poetry of ideas, including his writings on science and technology. Over a hundred pages of translations of his verse conclude the work.

The end of the Sino-Japanese War in 1945 brought not peace but renewed confrontation between Mao Zedong's Chinese Communist Party and Chiang Kaishek's Guomindang. The ensuing Civil War, at the threshold of the Cold War, held enormous significance for international strategic alliances, and in particular the interests of the United States in East Asia, and has been the subject of intense research and debate ever since. Joseph Yick's Making Urban Revolution in China: The CCP-GMD Struggle for Beiping-Tianjin, 1945-1949, based partly on the rich new sources available in the PRC since 1978, rethinks the traditional interpretations of the Chinese Communist Party's victory in 1949 and makes a major contribution to the historiography of this period.

The Wild And Arrogant written by Xinda Lian and has been published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Foreign Language Study categories.

Through its close reading of Xin Qiji's (1140-1207) song lyrics, this study reveals the aesthetic implications of the eccentricity of an unruly self within the Ruist tradition. Although focusing on one poet, Xinda Lian uses the entire poetic tradition as the context of his study. His analysis of the concept of «vital force» and of the friction between different literary trends sheds new light on the lingering tension in the Chinese poetic tradition. On the one hand, there exists a requirement of moral exemplariness and decorum, and on the other, lyric should be a site of personal emotion.
