The Late Neolithic And Early Chalcolithic Imagery In South Central Anatolia written by Patrycja Filipowicz and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-10-25 with Social Science categories.

This book provides a synthesis of Late Neolithic / Early Chalcolithic imagery from South-Central Anatolia, encompassing both Central Anatolia and the Lake District. It explores the nature of transformations and continuities in imagery during the period between 6500-5500 BC. The author examines three main categories of artifacts - pottery, figurines and stamp seals - to trace the presence and transformation of particular images in time. The Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük (7100- 5950 BC) in Central Anatolia is renowned for its elaborate art found inside the houses. A wide variety of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and geometric motifs and themes were reproduced on wall paintings, reliefs and mobile objects. The author addresses the question of what happened with the repertoire of motifs in the upper levels of Çatalhöyük and after its abandonment, and what circumstances might have been related to this transformation. To reassess the imagery, data was collected from Late Neolithic levels at Çatalhöyük investigated by the Polish team since 2001, as well as from four intensively excavated sites from the Lakes region: Hacılar, Kuruçay, Höyücek and Bademağacı. The author applies the semiotic perspective of American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, which they argue is a useful framework for discussing the imagery and its transformation over time. The analytical model used is the so-called replication, which allows grasping the diachronic changes. It has never been applied to studies on Neolithic / Chalcolithic imagery.

The Archaeomusicology Of The Ancient Near East written by Richard J. Dumbrill and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.

'This volume is a massive leap forward over any previous synthesis of the subject and includes at the very minimum so much information that its academic and scientific value is self evident. The freshness and profundity of Dumbrill's approach to the subject exceeds anything attempted before. 'The mythology of ancient Mesopotamia proves readable as tonal allegory when its numerology is decoded as tuning theory. By the third millennium BC both pentatonic and heptatonic tunings were quantified throughout the entire 12-tone gamut. Richard Dumbrill has documented the massive empirical experience with strings and pipes that makes this early musicalization of the universe believable.' The volume consists in 4 parts with foreword by Prof. Ernest McClain. The first is about the decipherment, translation and interpretation of the few theoretical cuneiform texts dating from the Old Babylonian period, about 2000 BC, to Neo Assyrian up to the mid first millennium BC. Dumbrill undertakes comparative analyses and criticism of various interpretations having preceded his own and introduces new material. The second part is about the Hurrian hymns, the earliest music ever written, circa 1400 BC, and are produced in their integrality. Attempts to the interpretation of Hymn H.6 are compared and followed by Dumbrill's methodology and interpretation. Each fragment of the collection is analyzed separately. The part concludes with statistical analyses attempting at the reconstruction of some Hurrian rules of composition. The third part consists in the organology with relevant philology and is the largest collection of the Mesopotamian instrumentarium. The last part is a unique lexicon of all known Mesopotamian terminology, with quotation of texts in which the philology appears. The book had been previously published under the title of 'The Musicology and Organology of the Ancient Near East' and now appears under its new title.

The Roman Baths And Macellum At Wroxeter written by Peter Ellis and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-15 with Social Science categories.

Excavations by Graham Webster at Wroxeter (Viroconium Cornoviorum) were undertaken on the southern part of the insula containing the baths and market hall (macellum), the latter one of few known in the province. The excavations enable the construction sequence and function of these major public buildings to be unravelled and analysed in detail on an insula untouched by medieval or later buildings. The work revealed that timber-framed buildings, constructed c AD 90 and fronting on Watling Street, were swept away to accommodate the public buildings, which were built over several decades between the 120s and 160s. Changes were introduced in the third century when a swimming pool (natatio) was filled in and an additional baths suite was built in the exercise yard to one side of the main baths complex. Excavations in the street porticoes and on Watling Street revealed a continued use of some of the buildings into the fifth century, after their original functions had ceased. The artefact and environmental finds reports are on material deriving mainly from the initial building campaign, but with some third-century groups. The report includes and edition and compilation of the accounts of the nineteenth-century excavations by Thomas Wright and others.

Each contribution explores different artistic expressions, receptions and functions of humour and identifies a series of problems in researching humour historically. This volume presents the official report of the 2008 excavation season at Tall al-ʿUmayri, a key settlement for understanding the Bronze and Iron Ages in western Jordan. Part of the long-running Madaba Plains Project, it documents the discoveries, methods, and personnel of that summer’s fieldwork while situating them within the project’s broader aim of tracing cycles of growth, decline, and adaptation in ancient settlement and land use. Combining technical rigor with comprehensive scope, the report serves as both a detailed catalog of finds and a permanent archive for future study. It publishes architectural remains, artifacts, environmental data, and specialized analyses spanning the Late Bronze Age through the Hellenistic period. Introductory chapters summarize major discoveries and the site’s occupational history across all seasons since 1984, while stratigraphic reports present the evidence layer by layer in its wider Near Eastern context. Substantial studies address pottery and ceramic technology (including the construction of pithoi), artifact assemblages, human skeletal remains, and the hinterland site of Drayjat, likely a strategic fortress. A typological study of collared pithoi traces the vessel form’s development from the Late Bronze / Iron I transition into the early Persian period. This report, eleventh in the series, marks a mature stage in the project’s development, reflecting large-scale collaboration and systematic integration of decades of accumulated data. Richly illustrated and data-driven, it will be an essential resource for archaeologists, historians of the ancient Near East, and advanced students seeking authoritative documentation of this pivotal site.

The quoit brooch style, a decorative style of animal and geometric motifs, is unique to southern England in the 5th century AD, with the greatest concentration of such items occurring in Kent. The author defines the style through an analysis of its design organization, and, by comparing it with near-contemporary styles in England and on the continent, he identifies those features which make it unique.
